Chapter 15 - On the Run Again

Sterling thought he had won. He believed that by stripping a teenage girl of her new wealth and legal backing, she would crumble into desperation. He had forgotten who Lily Miller was before she wore silk dresses.

At 3:00 AM, while Sterling’s guards watched the front entrance of the hospital floor, Lily slipped through the maintenance shaft with Ethan, carrying only a backpack containing her father’s journal, the brass key 314, and Ethan’s medical supplies. They boarded a night train heading deep into the old industrial district of Brooklyn—a maze of abandoned warehouses and underground passages where Lily had spent two harsh winters.

"Are we poor again, Lily?" Ethan asked quietly, clutching his small backpack as the train rattled through the dark tunnels.

"No, Ethan," Lily replied, pulling him close and kissing the top of his head. "We are fighting back. They took our home, but they can't take who we are. We're going to clear my father's name completely, wake up Arthur, and take back everything."

Their refuge was an abandoned subway maintenance station known only to the street dwellers of lower Manhattan. Lily set up a temporary camp, using her old contacts—a group of resourceful homeless teens led by a sharp nineteen-year-old named Sam—to set up a perimeter and gather intelligence on Sterling’s movements.

"Sterling’s moving fast," Sam reported that afternoon, handing Lily a fresh cup of hot tea. "He called an emergency shareholder meeting for tomorrow morning at Vance Tower. He intends to pass a motion dissolving the Miller Trust and absorbing its assets directly into his private holding company, 'Apex Global.' Once that money is liquidated into offshore accounts, your dad's legacy is gone forever."

"He needs the physical master ledger from Key 314 to authorize the final transfer from the state treasury," Lily realized, her eyes sharpening. "He doesn't have the key. My father hid it inside his journal."

"Then he's going to the Manhattan Vault Syndicate today," Sam said.

"No," Lily said, standing up with a fiery resolve. "We are going first."
