Chapter 8 - The Reckoning

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Blinding white light and concussive sound filled the grain silo.

Julian moved with terrifying, practiced speed. In a fraction of a second, he grabbed Sophia, pulling her behind a heavy concrete support pillar, shielding her entire body with his own trench coat as gunfire erupted through the fog.

Dante and twenty elite Rossi enforcers dropped from the ceiling on tactical ropes, clad in full body armor, their silenced weapons barking in rapid, precise bursts.

PFT! PFT! PFT!

Gabriel’s enforcers were eliminated before they could fire a single effective round. Weapons clattered to the floor, bodies hitting the concrete in rapid succession as Dante’s team swept the floor with absolute, military perfection.

Within forty-five seconds, the gunfire stopped.

The dust settled, revealing Dante standing near the center of the room, his weapon trained directly on Gabriel Vane, who was lying on his back, his arm shattered, groaning in agony.

In the corner, Victoria Sterling was screaming, scrambling backward across the filthy floor, having dropped her silver pistol during the explosion. Her leather coat was covered in soot, her hair tangled, her hands scraped and bloody.

Julian stepped out from behind the concrete pillar.

He adjusted his tie, his trench coat untouched, his posture completely immaculate. He turned to Sophia, checking her face gently with both hands.

"Are you hurt?" Julian asked softly, his dark eyes brimming with deep concern.

"I'm fine, Julian," Sophia breathed, holding his arm firmly. "I'm okay."

Julian turned toward Victoria.

She was cowering against the wall as Dante’s men stepped forward, grabbing her by her arms and pulling her to her feet.

"Julian! Please!" Victoria wailed, tears streaming down her soot-covered face. "It was Gabriel! He forced me! He threatened to kill me if I didn't give him the code! I love you, Julian! Please save me!"

Julian walked over to her, stopping two inches away.

He reached down, picking up her discarded silver pistol from the floor. He casually ejected the magazine, cleared the chamber, and tossed the empty weapon onto the concrete.

"You never loved me, Victoria," Julian said, his voice cold as absolute zero. "You loved the idea of wielding power without responsibility. You thought cruelty made you strong."

He looked over at Dante.

"Hand Gabriel Vane and Victoria Sterling directly to the FBI team waiting outside," Julian commanded. "Ensure the federal prosecutor receives the full audio recordings of their extortion attempt, along with Victoria’s grand larceny charges."

"No!" Victoria shrieked as the enforcers dragged her backward toward the rain-soaked entrance. "Julian! You can't do this to me! I am a Sterling! I am better than all of you!"

Her screams were swallowed by the sound of sirens blaring outside Pier 88 as federal agents surrounded the perimeter.

Julian turned away from her forever, taking Sophia’s hand in his, leading her out of the dark, ruined silo into the quiet, cleansing night rain.
