Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at Pier 88

The abandoned grain silo at Pier 88 loomed over the dark, murky waters of the Hudson River like a rusting iron giant.

Rain lashed against the corrugated metal walls, the wind howling through the broken glass windows of the upper floor.

Inside the vast, hollow space, Gabriel Vane stood near a concrete pillar, flanked by eight heavily armed enforcers carrying automatic weapons. Beside him, Victoria Sterling paced back and forth in a black leather coat, clutching a silver hand-gun, her face contorted with insane anticipation.

"Are you sure he's coming?!" Victoria yelled over the sound of the rain. "He's late!"

"Calm down, Victoria," Gabriel spat, checking his heavy gold watch. "Julian Rossi doesn't abandon his people. He'll be here."

Right on cue, the heavy steel sliding doors at the entrance of the silo creaked open.

A single tall figure stepped into the dim light of the overhead spotlights.

Julian Rossi walked forward alone. He wore a heavy black trench coat over his charcoal suit, his hands resting casually in his pockets, his posture completely relaxed as he stepped into a ring of eight armed men.

Beside him walked Sophia Vance.

She wore a warm wool coat, her face calm, her eyes steady, showing zero fear as she looked at the heavily armed men surrounding them.

Victoria let out a loud, hysterical laugh, stepping forward and waving her gun at Sophia. "Look at you! The little servant girl dressed up like a real lady! You thought you could take my place, didn't you?!"

Sophia didn't blink. She looked at Victoria with a look of profound, quiet pity. "I never wanted your place, Victoria. You had everything—wealth, status, power—and you threw it all away because you couldn't stand seeing someone else treated with basic human dignity."

"Shut up!" Victoria shrieked, aiming the gun directly at Sophia's chest. "Shut your pathetic mouth!"

"That's enough, Victoria," Gabriel interrupted, stepping between them, holding a black military laptop in his hands. He looked at Julian with a triumphant, predatory sneer. "Well, Julian. Here we are. Give me the signed deed to Port 44, and I'll let you watch your former maid suffer before I ruin you."

Julian stopped ten paces away, his dark eyes sweeping over Gabriel’s men with utter indifference.

"You're an idiot, Gabriel," Julian said softly.

Gabriel furrowed his brow. "What did you say?"

"I said you are an idiot," Julian repeated, stepping forward slowly. "Did you really think a man who built a billion-dollar logistics network would leave his master ledger on an unencrypted server beneath a library?"

Gabriel’s face went pale. "What are you talking about?! I have the files right here!"

"Check your laptop, Gabriel," Julian suggested calmly.

Gabriel frantically opened the laptop screen, typing rapid commands into the terminal.

Suddenly, the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding red.

CRITICAL ERROR: EXTERNAL MALWARE DETECTED. SYSTEM PURGE INITIATED. OFFSHORE ACCOUNTS REVERSED. GEOLOCATION BROADCAST TO FEDERAL AUTHORITIES: ACTIVE.

"What... what is this?!" Gabriel screamed, dropping the laptop onto the concrete floor as smoke began to pour from its cooling vents. "What did you do?!"

"I gave you exactly what you deserved," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register that made the entire room freeze. "A trap."

"KILL HIM!" Gabriel roared at his enforcers. "KILL THEM BOTH!"

Before Gabriel’s men could even raise their weapons, the roof of the grain silo exploded inward in a shower of glass, metal, and blinding flashbang grenades!
