Chapter 6 - The Trap

The atmosphere inside the command center of the Rossi estate was thick with deadly tension.
Monitors covered the walls, displaying security feeds, network diagnostics, and tactical maps of the city. Enforcers in dark suits moved quietly, checking their sidearms and preparing tactical equipment.
Julian sat at the central table, staring at the primary display screen. Dante stood beside him, analyzing the access logs.
"How did Vane get the bypass code, Dante?" Julian asked, his voice deathly quiet. "Only three people in the world know that combination. Me, you, and Marcus."
"The logs show the code was entered manually from the internal terminal in your private study," Dante explained, tapping the screen. "It wasn't an external hack, Boss. It was a physical override key that was cloned four months ago."
Julian froze. His mind flashed back to four months prior.
"Victoria," Julian murmured softly.
"It has to be," Dante agreed bitterly. "She was the only outsider who had unsupervised access to your private study during that week. She must have copied the key code and sold it to Vane."
Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phone on the table began to ring.
Julian tapped the speaker button. "Speak."
A loud, mocking laugh filled the room.
"Julian! My old friend!" Gabriel Vane’s voice echoed through the speaker. "I must say, your security system is quite impressive. But your taste in women? Absolutely tragic."
Julian didn't flinch. "You have thirty seconds to explain why you shouldn't be executed by sunrise, Gabriel."
"Oh, I don't think you're in a position to execute anyone, Julian," Gabriel chuckled darkly. "I have your primary ledger. By noon tomorrow, every federal agency in the country will have your offshore account numbers, your port manifests, and your client registries. Your empire is over."
"If you intended to leak it, you wouldn't be calling me," Julian said flatly. "What do you want?"
"A trade," Gabriel purred. "I'll give you the hard drive containing the only copy of the ledger. I'll even delete the backup files from my server."
"In exchange for what?"
"Two things," Gabriel declared smoothly. "First, you sign over the deed to Port 44 along the Hudson River. Second... you bring me the girl."
Julian’s hand gripped the edge of the table so hard the wood groaned. "What girl?"
"Don't play dumb, Rossi," Gabriel sneered. "Sophia Vance. Victoria is sitting right next to me, and she is very eager to complete her business with your former maid. Bring the girl to the abandoned grain silo at Pier 88 at midnight. Come alone, or the ledger goes live on the internet instantly."
The line went dead with a harsh static hum.
Dante stepped forward, his face dark with rage. "Boss, we can assemble a strike team of fifty men! We can level Pier 88 before midnight!"
"No," Julian said, standing up, his eyes cold as glaciers. "If Vane sees a strike team, he presses a button, and the foundation, the shipping ports, and every family under my protection falls apart."
"You can't take Sophia there!" Dante argued fiercely. "Victoria is insane! She'll kill her!"
Julian looked at Dante, a slow, lethal smile creeping across his dark face—the smile of a predator who had just led his enemy directly into a steel cage.
"Gabriel Vane thinks he stole my primary ledger, Dante," Julian said quietly.
Dante blinked. "Didn't he?"
Julian walked over to his wall safe, opened it, and pulled out a small, glass flash drive filled with glowing blue micro-circuits.
"Four months ago, the day after I threw Victoria out," Julian revealed, "I moved our actual primary ledger to an air-gapped quantum server in Switzerland. The ledger Vane stole from the library... is a honey-trap file I planted specifically for Victoria to find."
Dante gasped, a sudden look of pure awe spreading across his face. "The honey-trap file..."
"It contains self-executing trojan code," Julian explained coldly. "The moment Vane attempts to decrypt those files on his primary server tonight, it will wipe his entire network, freeze his offshore accounts, and broadcast his real location directly to the FBI."
"Then why go to Pier 88 at all?" Dante asked.

Julian loaded a black steel pistol with a quiet, satisfying clack, sliding it into his shoulder holster.
"Because Gabriel Vane and Victoria Sterling dared to threaten Sophia," Julian said softly. "And I am going to settle this debt personally."
