Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

By two o'clock in the morning, the rain was pouring over Manhattan in heavy, relentless sheets.

In a penthouse suite overlooking Central Park, Senator Arthur Sterling was frantically pacing his study, a half-empty bottle of bourbon in his hand. His desk was littered with campaign documents, bank statements, and panicked text messages from his political donors.

The mahogany doors to his study burst open.

Victoria stumbled inside, soaking wet, her auburn hair plastered to her neck, her emerald satin dress stained with mud at the hem. She was carrying a single leather suitcase, weeping uncontrollably.

"Dad!" she wailed, throwing herself onto the leather sofa. "He threw me out! Julian threw me out!"

Senator Sterling dropped his glass, the amber liquid splashing across his oriental rug. "What?! What are you talking about?! The wedding is in two months!"

"He broke the engagement!" she sobbed, clutching her face. "He took the ring! He canceled everything!"

"Why?!" Arthur screamed, grabbing his daughter by her shaking shoulders. "What did you do, Victoria?! What could you possibly have done to piss off Julian Rossi?!"

"Nothing!" she lied hysterically. "I did nothing! One of the stupid maids spilled scalding coffee on my dress, and I... I disciplined her! I threw the carafe at her! That's all! He took the side of a maid over me!"

Arthur’s eyes went wide with sheer terror. His grip on her shoulders went limp, his hands falling to his sides as if he had just been struck by lightning.

"You... you threw scalding coffee on one of his staff?" Arthur whispered, his voice trembling violently. "Do you have any idea who works in that manor, Victoria?! Those aren't migrant workers from an agency! The Rossi family employs the children and grandchildren of their most loyal soldiers!"

"She's a servant!" Victoria spat back defensively. "She deserved it!"

Before Arthur could slap her, his desk phone began to ring.

The sound was shrill, piercing through the quiet penthouse like a alarm.

Arthur stared at the flashing red light on the receiver. He slowly walked over, his hands shaking so violently he could barely press the speaker button.

"Sterling," he choked out.

"Arthur," a smooth, dark voice came through the speaker. It was not Julian. It was Marcus Vance—Julian’s chief legal counsel and financial strategist. "I am calling to inform you that Rossi Enterprises has officially liquidated its holdings in your campaign fund."

Arthur gripped the edge of his desk. "Marcus... please. It was a misunderstanding between the kids. Victoria was stressed—"

"Furthermore," Marcus interrupted smoothly, as if reading from a grocery list, "the twenty-million-dollar loan extended to your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands has been called in. Full repayment is required within forty-eight hours."

"Forty-eight hours?!" Arthur shrieked. "I don't have twenty million dollars! That money was swallowed by the casino debts in Macao!"

"Then I suggest you start selling your assets, Senator," Marcus replied coldly. "Because at nine o'clock tomorrow morning, the federal prosecutor’s office will receive an anonymous package containing your illegal wire transfer receipts, your bribery ledgers, and video footage of your daughter assaulting an employee."

"Marcus, wait! Please! Let me talk to Julian!"

"Mr. Rossi is currently unavailable," Marcus said flatly. "He is reviewing applications for a new philanthropy director. Goodnight, Senator."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Arthur sank into his leather chair, staring blankly at the wall as his phone began buzzing frantically with news alerts.
