Chapter 1 - The Ring on the Table

The dark tungsten band sat motionless beside the crystal tumbler, catching the soft glow of the chandelier. To Victoria, it was a tiny piece of metal; to everyone else in the room, it was a death warrant for her social standing.

"Julian... what are you doing?" Victoria’s voice cracked, the haughty aristocrat vanishing beneath a surge of genuine panic. She took a step toward him, her hand extending instinctively toward the table. "You’re acting ridiculous. Because of a maid? Because she ruined my dinner?"

Julian did not look at her. He adjusted his cuffs, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Sophia, who was trembling against the mahogany credenza, clutching her ruined wrist.

"Dante," Julian said softly.

His chief of security stepped forward immediately from the heavy oak doors, his massive frame casting a shadow across the room. "Boss."

"Take Sophia to the private medical wing," Julian commanded, his voice utterly devoid of warmth, yet filled with an undeniable, protective authority. "Have Dr. Mercer evaluate the burns immediately. Ensure she receives top-tier treatment, a full month of paid leave, and three times her annual salary wired to her account tonight."

Sophia’s eyes widened in shock. "Mr. Rossi... sir, I... you don't have to—"

"Go, Sophia," Julian said gently, offering her a faint, rare nod of respect. "You will never be hurt in this house again."

Dante gently guided the weeping girl out of the dining room, closing the heavy doors behind them with a muffled click.

The silence that returned to the grand hall was suffocating.

Victoria stood frozen, her chest heaving beneath her emerald satin gown. "Three times her salary? Are you insane?! You’re humiliating me in front of your own men for a peasant!"

Julian finally turned his gaze toward her.

It was like being pinned by a pair of steel blades. There was no anger in his dark eyes, no red flash of temper. There was only a vast, empty void—the cold calculation of a man who had eliminated rival families and brought city officials to their knees without ever raising his voice.

"Sophia's grandfather served my father for thirty years," Julian said, his words measured and lethal. "Her family built the foundation of this estate. You, Victoria, have been here for four months. You are a guest who mistook my hospitality for royalty."

Victoria gasped, her hand flying to her throat, her fingers brushing the sapphire pendant he had bought her in Paris. "I am your fiancée! My father is Senator Sterling! We signed a contract—"

"A contract I am breaking," Julian interrupted, leaning forward slightly, pressing his palms against the edge of the mahogany table. "Your father needed my funding to clear his offshore gambling debts. I gave him twenty million dollars because I believed his daughter possessed the dignity, intelligence, and grace required to stand beside me."

He pointed a single finger toward the door where Sophia had been led out.

"Instead, I brought a tyrant into my home," Julian continued coldly. "A pathetic, insecure woman who strikes defenseless people to make herself feel powerful. You are not fit to wear the Rossi name. You are not fit to sit at this table."

"You can't do this!" Victoria shrieked, her regal posture collapsing into raw, desperate fury. She slammed her hands against the table, making the fine china rattle. "My father will ruin you! He has federal investigators on his payroll! The Sterling family name will drag you through the mud!"

Julian let out a single, dry laugh that sent a chill through the room.

"Your father exists because I permit it," Julian said quietly. "He owes money to men far worse than me. By midnight, those men will learn that the Rossi umbrella no longer covers the Sterling family."

Victoria’s face drained of all color.

"Dante’s men will escort you to your quarters," Julian added, turning his back on her as he picked up his glass of scotch. "You have twenty minutes to pack your personal belongings. Anything purchased with Rossi funds remains in this house. If you are on my property when the sun rises, you will be removed by force."

"Julian!" she screamed, her voice cracking as two suited enforcers stepped up on either side of her, grabbing her satin-clad arms firmly. "Julian, look at me! You love me!"

May you like

Julian took a slow sip of his scotch, his back turned, his eyes staring out the dark bay windows at the estate grounds.

"I loved an illusion," he murmured as the doors swung open. "Take her out."
