Chapter 7 - The Settlement That Wasn't

In an attempt to avoid a lengthy prison sentence, Victor’s legal counsel begged for a plea deal that included a full civil settlement. They offered Evelyn 100% of the financial value of the restaurant group, as well as their marital home, provided she signed a non-disclosure agreement and asked the prosecutor for leniency.

In a private meeting room inside the courthouse, Victor sat across from Evelyn, separated by a glass divider.

"Take the deal, Evelyn," Victor begged, his voice trembling. "You get everything. The money, the house, the brand. Just sign the NDA. Don't let them send me to prison. I'm sorry, okay? I shouldn't have said those things in court."

Evelyn stared at the man she had loved and served for two decades. She realized she felt no hatred for him anymore—only pity for a man so weak he had to crush others to feel tall.

"You still don't understand, Victor," Evelyn said softly through the receiver. "You think this is about money. It was never about the money. It was about my dignity. You called me a pack mule because you thought I was too broken to kick back. I won't sign an NDA. The world needs to know what you did, so other women stuck in the shadows of men like you know they can survive."

She hung up the receiver and walked out, leaving Victor banging on the glass in despair.
