Chapter 2 - The Fraud Unravels

Within forty-eight hours of the court order, the veneer of Victor Hale’s "self-made" empire began to crack. Because the court had frozen his accounts, Victor was forced to scramble to meet payroll for his flagship restaurant, Le Prestige.

Evelyn sat in Grace’s high-rise office, watching the city skyline below. For twenty years, she had worked sixteen-hour days in greasy aprons, waking up at 4:00 AM to organize delivery trucks while Victor slept in. She had been the heart, the engine, and the silent brain of the operation.

"He tried to pull $200,000 out of a secondary offshore account this morning," Grace said, setting down two cups of coffee. "The freeze caught it. Victor is panicked, Evelyn. He’s reaching out to investors, but word travels fast in the restaurant industry."

Right on cue, Evelyn’s phone rang. It was an unknown number, but she recognized the area code. She answered and put it on speaker.

"Evelyn! You stupid, ungrateful woman!" Victor’s voice came screeching through the speaker, devoid of his courtroom polish. "You’re destroying everything I built! Do you think anyone will care about your pathetic little scars? I made you! You were nothing before me!"

Evelyn took a calm sip of her coffee. "You didn't make me, Victor. You used me. You used my strength to build your crown, and then you convinced yourself you grew the gold. But the foundation was always mine. And now, I’m taking it back."

"I’ll burn the restaurant to the ground before I give you a single dime!" he screamed.

"You don't have to give me anything," Evelyn replied softly. "The law is going to take it for me." She hung up before he could answer.
