Chapter 6 - Criminal Charges Filed
Two months after the initial divorce hearing, the hammer dropped. The State Attorney’s Office officially indicted Victor Hale on multiple felony charges: tax evasion, commercial insurance fraud, intentional misclassification of workers, and grand larceny.
The court scene was vastly different this time. Victor sat at the defense table in a jumpsuit, having been denied bail after attempting to liquidate frozen assets through an offshore shell company. His high-priced lawyer had abandoned him due to unpaid fees, leaving him with a public defender.
Evelyn sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Grace and Chef Mateo. She wore an elegant dark navy suit, her hair styled with dignity, her shoulders straight and proud. She no longer wore high-collared shirts to hide her neck or long sleeves to conceal her burn scars. She wore them openly—not as marks of shame, but as badges of survival.

When the prosecutor read the charges, Victor looked back at Evelyn. The arrogance in his eyes had been completely replaced by an empty, hollow desperation. He mouthed the words, Please, Evelyn.
She looked at him with calm detachment and simply turned her eyes back toward the bench.
