Chapter 7 - CLEANING HOUSE

The fallout from the Grand Imperial Gala sent shockwaves through Washington's political and corporate landscape.
Within twenty-four hours, the news media was dominated by headlines detailing the explosive downfall of Thorne Industries: DEFENSE TYCOON ARRESTED AT GALA BY DECORATED COLONEL WIFE. BLOOD EMERALDS AND FORGED SIGNATURES: THE FALL OF DANIEL THORNE. PENTAGON AUDITOR EXPOSES $400M CORPORATE FRAUD SCHEME.
While Daniel, Vanessa, and Eleanor sat in federal holding cells, denied bail due to extreme flight risk, Evelyn wasted no time securing her personal life.
Accompanied by Captain Torres, two armed military escorts, and a team of locksmiths, Evelyn arrived at the grand Thorne estate in Lomas de Chapultepec.
Standing on the front porch was Dr. Aris Thorne, who handed Evelyn the keys to the property.
"The estate was purchased using Daniel's corporate account, which has now been seized by the federal government," Aris explained. "However, because the primary down payment came from your deployment account, the federal receiver has officially transferred sole ownership of the property to you."
Evelyn walked through the heavy mahogany doors into the grand foyer. She remembered how Eleanor had strutted through these halls, criticizing Evelyn’s taste, moving her furniture, and demanding that Evelyn stay out of sight when important guests visited.
"Torres," Evelyn commanded calmly.
"Yes, Colonel?"
"Call a liquidation team. Everything in this house that belonged to Daniel or Eleanor—the furniture, the artwork, the expensive suits, the designer dresses—I want it auctioned off by tomorrow afternoon."
"And the proceeds, ma'am?"
"Donate every single cent to the Veterans' Widows and Orphans Fund," Evelyn said. "I don't want a single trace of their greed remaining in my home."
By sunset, three moving trucks were parked in the driveway. Workers cleared out Daniel’s luxury wardrobe, Eleanor’s collections of expensive crystal, and Vanessa’s left-behind designer dresses.
Evelyn sat in the spacious, sunlit master study—the room where Daniel had once forbidden her from entering. On the desk lay the official divorce decree, drafted by Evelyn’s military legal team.
It stripped Daniel of all claims to her assets, her military pension, and the estate. Most importantly, it granted Evelyn sole legal and physical custody of Victoria and Hope, while terminating Daniel’s parental rights on the grounds of severe child neglect and felony criminal conviction.
Aris walked into the study, placing a cup of hot chamomile tea on the desk before her.
"The hospital just called," Aris smiled warmly. "Victoria and Hope have been cleared to leave the NICU tomorrow morning. Their weight is stable, and their vitals are perfect."

Evelyn looked up, tears of pure relief flooding her eyes. For the first time in months, the heavy, suffocating darkness lifted from her heart.
"They're coming home," Evelyn whispered, touching the silver eagle on her collar. "They're finally coming home."
