Chapter 4 - THE GRAND IMPERIAL GALA

The Grand Ballroom of the Grand Imperial Hotel was a masterpiece of political power and corporate decadence. Crystal chandeliers threw sparkling light across marble floors, while a live string quartet played softly in the background. High-ranking military officers, US senators, defense executives, and international diplomats mingled over flutes of vintage Dom Pérignon.
At eight o'clock, Daniel Thorne arrived, looking every bit the triumphant corporate tycoon in an Italian tuxedo. On his arm was Vanessa Vance, wearing an even more scandalous emerald-green silk backless gown that matched Eleanor’s brooch. Behind them walked Eleanor, her head held high, dripping in diamonds.
"Ah, Thorne!" Senator Harrison called out, stepping forward to shake Daniel's hand. "Congratulations! The word on the street is that the Department of Defense is officially signing the contract tonight!"
"Thank you, Senator," Daniel beamed, puffing his chest out. "Thorne Industries has always been dedicated to serving our nation's defense infrastructure. Hard work, loyalty, and absolute transparency—that’s our motto."
"And who is this lovely lady?" Harrison asked, gesturing toward Vanessa.
"This is Vanessa Vance," Daniel introduced proudly. "My vice president of public relations... and my fiancée."
Eleanor joined in smoothly, touching her emerald brooch. "Vanessa has been a godsend, Senator. Unlike some people who drain a man’s energy and resources, Vanessa builds empires."
Across the ballroom, a sudden murmur began to ripple through the crowd near the main entrance.
The string quartet trailed off into silence. Conversations died down as guests turned to look at the grand double doors.
A squad of four United States Marine Corps Honor Guards in crisp dress uniforms stepped through the entrance, standing at rigid attention on either side of the carpet.
Behind them walked General Mercer, decorated with ribbons and medals across his chest. But General Mercer was not walking alone.
Walking beside him, her posture flawless, her stride radiating an overwhelming, terrifying aura of absolute authority, was Evelyn Shaw.
She did not wear a hospital gown. She did not look weak, pale, or broken.
She wore the dark blue dress uniform of a full Colonel in the United States Army. On her shoulders gleamed the silver eagles of her rank. Across her chest was a double row of high-level military decorations, including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with Valor, and the Defense Superior Service Medal.
Her dark hair was styled into a sleek, regulation bun. Her face was set in cold, unyielding marble.
The entire ballroom held its breath.
Daniel’s glass of champagne slipped from his fingers, shattering loudly against the marble floor, splashing champagne across Vanessa’s designer shoes.
"What... what is she wearing?!" Vanessa gasped, her face draining of all color. "Why is she wearing a fake military uniform?!"
Eleanor’s eyes bulged in utter horror. "Daniel... what is this?! Is she insane?! She’s going to get us all arrested for imposter fraud!"
Daniel stood frozen, his heart hammering violently against his ribs. He looked at the silver eagles on Evelyn’s shoulders, then at General Mercer—the three-star general who commanded the entire Defense Logistics Agency—walking half a step behind her with obvious, profound respect.
"That's no fake uniform," Senator Harrison whispered in absolute shock, stepping away from Daniel. "My God... that's Colonel Evelyn Shaw! She’s the Chief Forensic Auditor for the Pentagon’s Special Black Budget Division!"
The words hit Daniel like a physical sledgehammer.

Government clerk. Useless nobody. Lethargic burden.
The lies Daniel had told himself for four years collapsed into a terrifying, inescapable reality.
