Chapter 1 - THE TACTICAL RETALIATION

General Mercer’s voice crackled through the encrypted satellite line, cutting through the sterile hum of the neonatal intensive care unit like a thunderclap.

"Colonel Shaw," Mercer said, his tone instantly shifting from standard military authority to sharp, razor-focused alarm. "Repeat your last statement. Did you say you're pulling your recusal on Thorne Industries?"

"Affirmative, General," Evelyn replied, her voice stripped of all emotion, replaced by the deadly, calm cadence that had earned her a reputation as the Department of Defense’s most feared forensic auditor. "My medical leave is concluded. I am authorizing immediate federal asset tracing, classified audit protocols, and a full forensic freeze on all accounts associated with Daniel Thorne, Thorne Industries, and their subsidiary shell companies."

Mercer let out a low whistle over the line. "Evelyn... for two years, you kept your rank completely classified from your husband to protect military intelligence protocols. You let us think you were taking a quiet administrative retirement. What happened?"

Evelyn turned her head slightly, looking through the glass window of her private hospital room into the NICU. Inside two separate incubators lay her newborn twin daughters, born four weeks premature, their tiny bodies hooked to heart monitors and intravenous lines.

"Daniel forged my biometric signature to transfer three million dollars of classified combat pay from my offshore deployment account," Evelyn said, her jaw tightening until her teeth threatened to crack. "He used those funds to settle his mistress’s family mortgage and purchase stolen military-grade gemstones for his mother. Three days ago, he ignored sixteen emergency medical calls while I was in hemorrhagic shock. Today, he served me with divorce papers and called me a useless nobody."

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the line. General Mercer was a thirty-year combat veteran who had seen the brutal realities of war, but the quiet, monstrous betrayal described by his finest intelligence officer made his blood boil.

"Colonel," Mercer said, his voice dropping an octave into pure steel. "The Department of Defense contract Thorne Industries is lobbying for is worth four hundred million dollars. The signing ceremony is scheduled for Friday night at the Grand Imperial Hotel in Washington. The Secretary of Defense himself will be attending."

"Cancel the signing?" Evelyn asked quietly.

"Negative," Mercer replied with a dark, dangerous chuckle. "We don't cancel it. We let him think he’s won. We let him invite his mistress, his mother, and his board of directors. You will attend that gala in your full dress blues, Colonel. I will personally brief the Inspector General, the FBI Cyber Crime Division, and the Military Criminal Investigative Service. By Friday night, Daniel Thorne won't just lose his contract. He’ll lose his freedom."

"Thank you, General," Evelyn said. "I need one more thing."

"Name it."

"Full-time tier-one private security for the NICU unit. Two armed guards at the door, round-the-clock medical surveillance. If Daniel or his mother come within fifty yards of my daughters, I want them detained for breach of federal security."

"Consider it done. Rest up, Evelyn. On Friday, we go to war."

Evelyn ended the call, sliding the encrypted satellite phone back into her bag. She slowly swung her legs over the side of the hospital bed, gritting her teeth against the sharp incision pain from her emergency C-section.

She stood up, holding her IV pole for balance, and walked steadily toward the NICU glass. She pressed her fingertips against the cold glass, looking at her two tiny girls—named Victoria and Hope.

"Your father thinks I'm weak because I stayed quiet," Evelyn whispered, tears finally slipping down her cheeks, burning with a lethal fire. "He thinks because I put away my uniform to be his wife, I forgot how to fight. But he forgot who I was before I met him. And by the time I'm done, he will remember every single star on my shoulder."
