Chapter 2 - THE PAPER TRAIL OF GREED

While Daniel Thorne was celebrating his upcoming contract at high-end steakhouses across the city, Evelyn spent the next forty-eight hours transforming her VIP hospital room into a command center.
With the assistance of Captain Rachel Torres—her former chief of intelligence staff who arrived in civilian clothes carrying three military-grade encrypted laptops—Evelyn systematically disassembled Daniel’s financial empire piece by piece.
"Look at this, Colonel," Captain Torres said, spinning a laptop screen toward Evelyn. "It's worse than we thought. Daniel didn't just forge your signature for the three million dollars from your deployment account. He’s been using Thorne Industries to launder funds through a real estate holding company registered under Vanessa Vance's name."
Evelyn leaned forward, scanning the lines of coded transactions. "Vanessa’s parents didn't just face foreclosure. Her father, Richard Vance, was a disgraced subcontractor who was blacklisted by the Navy five years ago for selling counterfeit steel alloy components."
"Exactly," Torres nodded, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "Daniel used your stolen combat pay to clear Richard Vance’s debts, then set up a shell company called Vance Logistics to route illegal kickbacks back into his mother Eleanor’s private offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands."
Evelyn let out a cold, mocking laugh. "Eleanor... the woman who spent four years treating me like a charity case. She called me an 'expensive, lethargic burden' while wearing an emerald brooch purchased with money I earned dodging roadside bombs in Fallujah."
"Speaking of the brooch," Torres pulled up a high-resolution customs document. "That emerald wasn't bought at a high-end jeweler in New York, Colonel. It was smuggled out of a conflict zone in South America by one of Thorne’s defense subcontractors. It’s an unregistered blood emerald. Importing it is a federal offense under the Clean Diamond Act."
"So Eleanor isn't just wearing stolen money," Evelyn observed, her green eyes flashing. "She's wearing physical evidence of federal smuggling."
A soft knock at the door interrupted them. Two imposing men in dark suits with earpieces stepped into the room, followed by Dr. Aris Thorne—Daniel’s estranged older brother.
Unlike Daniel, who was flashy, arrogant, and obsessed with social status, Aris Thorne was a quiet, brilliant chief of pediatric neurosurgery who had cut ties with his family years ago over their toxic greed.
"Evelyn," Aris said softly, stepping into the room with a look of profound sorrow and respect. "I just heard what happened. I came straight from surgery."
"Aris," Evelyn said, gesturing for him to sit. "You didn't have to come."
"I did," Aris insisted, his voice thick with emotion. "I saw the girls in the NICU. They're fighter, Evelyn. They have your spirit. But when I checked the hospital logs and saw that my brother ignored sixteen emergency transfusion requests while you were hemorrhaging..." Aris buried his face in his hands, shaking his head. "I am deeply ashamed to share his blood."
"He isn't your responsibility, Aris," Evelyn said gently. "Daniel made his choices."
"He’s planning to evict you from the estate on Saturday," Aris warned, looking up with dark determination. "He had his lawyer file an emergency motion claiming you are mentally unstable due to post-partum psychosis. He wants full custody of the twins—not because he loves them, but because he wants to claim child support and access your military trust funds."
Evelyn’s smile was terrifying in its calm simplicity. "Let him file his motions, Aris. Let him spend every dollar he has left on high-priced lawyers. Because on Friday night, Daniel won't be living in the estate. He’ll be living in a federal holding cell."
Aris looked at the tactical laptops, the encrypted military feeds, and the cold, commanding posture of the woman he had once known only as his brother's quiet wife.
"What do you need me to do?" Aris asked without hesitation.
May you like
"I need you to take temporary legal guardianship of Victoria and Hope for forty-eight hours starting Friday night," Evelyn said. "So that when the federal marshals arrest Daniel and Eleanor, my daughters are safely surrounded by the only Thorne who possesses an ounce of human decency."
Aris stood up, extending his hand. "Consider it done, Colonel."
