Chapter 5 - THE AUDIT BEGINS

Evelyn walked steadily down the center aisle of the ballroom, the crowd parting before her like the Red Sea. General Mercer walked at her right flank, while Captain Torres followed behind carrying a heavy leather briefcase.
Evelyn stopped six feet away from Daniel, Vanessa, and Eleanor. Her green eyes locked onto Daniel’s pale, sweat-slicked face with the precision of a sniper scope.
"Good evening, Daniel," Evelyn said, her voice clear, rich, and carrying effortlessly across the silent room.
Daniel swallowed hard, trying desperately to regain his composure in front of the senators and executives watching him. "Evelyn... what is the meaning of this costume party? You’re supposed to be in the hospital! Have you completely lost your mind?!"
General Mercer stepped forward, his eyes burning with fury. "Watch your mouth, Mr. Thorne! You are speaking to a decorated senior officer of the United States Armed Forces! One more disrespectful word and I will have you detained for military insubordination!"
Daniel flinched, backing up a step. "General... there’s been a mistake! She’s my wife! She works a basic clerical job for the government!"
"Colonel Shaw’s rank and assignment were classified under National Security Directive 41," General Mercer declared loudly, ensuring every news camera and senator in the room heard every word. "She was granted special dispensation to maintain a quiet private life while conducting high-level anti-corruption investigations for the Pentagon. You didn't marry a clerk, Thorne. You married the woman who approves your entire company’s defense clearance."
Vanessa gasped, clutching Daniel’s arm so hard her manicured nails nearly drew blood. "Daniel... what is he talking about?!"
Evelyn stepped forward, her eyes shifting from Daniel to Eleanor. She looked directly at the massive green stone pinned to Eleanor’s lapel.
"That’s a beautiful brooch, Eleanor," Evelyn said softly. "Would you mind telling the Inspector General where my husband bought it?"
Eleanor instinctively covered the stone with her hand, her voice trembling hysterically. "It... it was a gift! A legal gift from my son!"
"It was purchased with three million dollars stolen from my classified combat deployment account," Evelyn stated coldly, pulling a tablet from Captain Torres’s briefcase. "A transfer that Daniel executed four days ago by forging my biometric signature while I was unconscious in emergency surgery."
Gasps of horror echoed through the high-society crowd.
"Furthermore," Evelyn continued, her voice cutting like a scalpel, "the emerald itself is an unrefined conflict gem smuggled out of Colombia by Richard Vance—Vanessa’s father—to settle illegal gambling debts."
Vanessa’s face went ghastly white. "That's a lie! My father is a respected businessman!"
"Your father was blacklisted by the US Navy five years ago for treasonous fraud," Captain Torres chimed in, clicking a button on the tablet.
Behind the main stage, the massive projector screen that was supposed to display Thorne Industries' promotional video suddenly flickered and changed.
Instead of promotional slides, the screen displayed bank records, wire transfers, forged signature analysis, and recorded phone calls between Daniel, Vanessa, and black-market contractors.
A recorded phone call began playing through the ballroom speakers: Daniel's voice: "...just forge her biometric key. She's pregnant and sedated, she'll never check the deployment account. Use three million to clear Vance's mortgage, and buy the Colombian emerald for my mother. Once the Defense contract is signed, I'll dump her at the hospital..."

The ballroom exploded into absolute uproar.
Senators backed away from Daniel as if he were covered in plague. Executives shook their heads in disgust, while news cameras flashed incessantly, recording every second of the public execution of Daniel Thorne’s reputation.
