Chapter 8 - The Cornered Beast

In a fit of blind, panicked rage, Senator Vance jumped off the side of the stage, lunged toward me, and pulled a small silver pistol from his inner jacket pocket.
"If I'm going down, you're coming with me!" Vance screamed, aiming the barrel directly at my chest.
The women in the ballroom shrieked in terror, diving behind tables as guests scrambled frantically for the exits.
I didn't flinch. I didn't step back.
Before Vance could squeeze the trigger, the heavy double glass doors of the ballroom were blown inward with a deafening CRACK.
"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"
A tactical team of federal agents in heavy armor swarmed the ballroom floor, their weapons trained on Vance.
Standing right behind the lead tactical officer was Marcus Sterling, wearing his federal badge on his belt, holding a drawn sidearm.
"Drop the gun, Richard!" Marcus commanded, his voice echoing like thunder across the marble room. "It’s over!"
Vance froze, his hands trembling violently as he looked at the red laser dots dancing across his chest. He looked at me, at the live cameras still recording his every move, at the federal agents surrounding him, and realized his grand castle of lies had completely burned to the ground.
With a heavy, strangled sob of defeat, Vance dropped the silver pistol onto the marble floor. It clattered against the tile.
Two federal agents rushed forward, slamming Vance face-first onto the ground, pulling his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Richard Vance," the lead agent announced loudly, "you are under arrest for federal human trafficking, conspiracy to commit murder, grand extortion, and treason."
As they pulled Vance up to his feet, dragging him away in chains past his former peers, Vance looked back at me one last time. His face was broken, his political career destroyed, his life over.
I stood tall, smoothing down the front of my black dress, breathing in the sweet, cold air of freedom.
Marcus stepped up to me, placing a warm, protective hand on my shoulder. "You did it, Clara. You brought down the most dangerous man in the state."
"Is my son safe?" I asked, my voice cracking with emotion.
Marcus smiled warmly, pointing toward the open balcony doors. "See for yourself."

Standing at the entrance of the balcony was Sarah, accompanied by Ellen, carrying baby Leo wrapped safely in his warm flannel blanket.
I ran across the ballroom floor, throwing my arms around Sarah and Ellen, pulling my tiny, precious son into my arms, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated joy as Leo opened his sweet dark eyes and let out a soft, contented coo against my chest.
