Chapter 5 - The Snake Stirs

By four o'clock the following afternoon, the national news outlets were flooded with my face.
ALERT: MENTALLY ILL MOTHER ABDUCTS NEWBORN FROM VIRGINIA CLINIC. POLICE SEARCH FOR CLARA MILLER — CONSIDERED DANGEROUS TO HER CHILD.
I stood in Marcus’s fortified living room, watching Senator Richard Vance give a televised press conference outside the state capitol building.
Vance looked immaculate. He was sixty-two, with silver hair, wearing a three-thousand-dollar suit, putting on a heartbreaking performance of deep civic concern for the cameras.
"As a patron of Dr. Evans' charitable medical center," Vance said into a cluster of microphones, dabbing a fake tear from his eye, "my heart breaks for this poor, disturbed woman. We only want what is best for little baby Leo. Clara Miller is suffering from severe postpartum psychosis. I appeal directly to her: Clara, turn yourself in. Let us get you the psychiatric help you need, and let us bring your innocent baby back to safety."
"He’s good," Sarah muttered, standing behind me, her arms crossed tight. "The whole country believes him."
"The public believes what they see on television," Marcus said, walking into the room carrying two satellite phones. "But federal judges require physical evidence."
Marcus plugged my husband’s micro-SD card into an encrypted terminal. For the next three hours, Marcus’s legal team parsed through thousands of files, wire transfers, audio logs, and email chains linking Senator Vance directly to Dr. Evans, human trafficking networks, and high-level corporate extortion schemes across four states.
"It’s all here," Marcus gasped, his eyes wide as he scrolled through a folder labeled PROJECT HERCULES. "The offshore accounts, the wire transfers for the twenty million dollars, and the forged adoption papers signed by Vance’s private notary three days before you even went into labor!"
"Can we take this to the Department of Justice?" I asked.
Marcus shook his head grimly. "The Assistant Attorney General for the Eastern District is Vance’s former law partner. If we submit this through normal channels, the files will be classified, buried, and a swat team will be dispatched to this farmhouse within twenty minutes to eliminate us."
"Then how do we fight him?" I asked.
"We force his hand," Marcus said, turning his head to look at me. "Vance has a private gala tonight at his estate in McLean, Virginia. Every major news network, political donor, and federal judge in the state will be in attendance. Vance thinks you're hiding in a ditch, terrified, waiting to be arrested."
A cold, fearless smile broke across my face. "He thinks I'm weak because I just gave birth."

"What are you going to do, Clara?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling with excitement.
"I’m going to crash his party," I said. "And I’m going to deliver the truth directly to his guests."
