Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Ballroom

Two broad-shouldered security fixers in black tuxedos immediately stepped out from the crowd, reaching into their jackets for their concealed weapons.

"Don't move!" one of the fixers whispered harshly, stepping into my path.

"I wouldn't pull those weapons if I were you," I said calmly, raising my voice so every guest in the room could hear. "Because right now, every camera in this room—and five hundred thousand viewers on a live international news stream—is watching this exact conversation."

A collective murmur rippled through the crowd of dignitaries. Guests began pulling out their smartphones, pointing their cameras directly at Vance and me.

Senator Vance’s face turned bright red. He forced a strained, patronizing laugh, stepping to the front of the stage, raising his hands in a fake gesture of sympathy.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please remain calm," Vance announced into his microphone, putting on his seasoned political persona. "This is Clara Miller—the unfortunate woman I mentioned in the news today. She is suffering from a severe, acute mental breakdown following the birth of her child. Clara... please, put down whatever you're doing. My medical team is outside. We will help you."

"Your medical team?" I laughed—a cold, mocking sound that echoed off the high ceilings. "Do you mean Dr. Evans, Senator? The doctor you paid twenty million dollars to steal my baby from my hospital bed last night?"

The ballroom erupted into hushed, shocked gasps.

"That's a lie!" Vance roared, losing his composure for a split second. "She’s delusional!"

"Is it a lie, Senator?" I pressed a button on a small remote control in my hand.

Instantly, the massive high-definition projector screens surrounding the ballroom—normally displaying Vance’s campaign logos—lit up.

Displayed across the massive displays were high-resolution scans of the wire transfers from Vance’s Swiss shell company directly into Dr. Evans’ private account, alongside the forged adoption papers, the audio logs of Dr. Evans ordering the nurse to push the IV sedative, and the encrypted communications between Vance and his fixers detailing the plan to eliminate me after taking my son.

The crowd went dead silent.

Federal judges gasped. Prominent news anchors standing near the bar stared at the screens with their mouths open.

Vance backed away from the microphone, his skin turning a sickly shade of grey. Sweat broke out across his forehead. His wife stepped away from him on the stage, looking at her husband in horror.

"You... you stole those files..." Vance stammered, his voice trembling violently.

"Those files belonged to my late husband, Richard," I said, stepping right up to the edge of the stage, looking him dead in the eye. "The husband you murdered to get your hands on his family’s three-hundred-million-dollar trust fund. You didn't want to adopt a child. You wanted to buy a slave to fund your political empire."

Outside the estate, the loud, wailing screech of dozens of police sirens began to echo through the night, growing closer with every second.

"That's not the local police, Richard," I smiled coldly. "That’s the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Assistant Director Marcus Sterling’s task force. They have the original ledgers. It’s over."

Vance looked around the room, frantically searching for support, but every single guest, donor, and politician turned their backs on him, slowly stepping away, leaving him standing completely alone on the lit stage like a trapped rat.
