Chapter 1 - Shadows in the Hallway

The heavy leather-soled shoes clicked against the polished terrazzo floor outside my door with a slow, terrifying rhythm.
I stood in the center of the private hospital suite, my chest heaving, holding my newborn son tight against my heart. Beneath my feet, Dr. Evans lay motionlessly on the linoleum, a thin trickling stream of blood running from his temple across the cold white tile.
The junior nurse—whose name tag read Sarah—was trembling so violently she looked ready to faint. Her hands were pressed over her mouth, her eyes wide as saucers as she stared at the unconscious body of the chief surgeon.
"Dr. Evans?" the gravelly voice outside called out again, accompanied by a sharp, authoritative knock on the heavy oak door. "We hear a baby crying. Open the door. The Senator’s transport vehicle is waiting at the rear service bay."
I didn't hesitate. Postpartum exhaustion was forgotten; my body was running on pure survival instinct.
I snapped my gaze toward Sarah, stepping close enough that she could smell the iron tang of adrenaline on my skin. "Where is the emergency exit?" I demanded in a fierce, razor-thin whisper. "Is there another way out of this room?"
Sarah swallowed hard, pointing a shaking finger toward a narrow door in the rear corner of the suite. "The... the utility linen chute," she stammered, her voice barely audible. "It leads into the underground laundry facility. There’s a service elevator that opens into the alley behind the clinic."
"Get the key," I ordered.
"I... I can't! If Senator Vance finds out—"
"Senator Vance just paid Dr. Evans twenty million dollars to steal my baby!" I hissed, grabbing Sarah’s shoulder with my free hand. "If those men walk through that door, they will execute you as a witness to Dr. Evans’ body! You help me now, or we both die in this room!"
The reality of her situation hit Sarah like a physical blow. Her face went pale white. She scrambled toward the sink, grabbed a heavy master keycard off the counter, and lunged for the utility door.
Suddenly, the brass door handle of the main suite jingled violently.
"Evans! We're coming in!"
CLICK.
The heavy lock disengaged.
Just as the main door began to swing inward, revealing the dark silhouette of a broad-shouldered man in a tailored charcoal suit holding a silenced pistol, Sarah swiped her keycard across the utility door. The narrow access panel popped open with a soft hiss.
I shoved Sarah into the dark service corridor ahead of me, slipped through the frame, and pulled the heavy steel utility door shut behind us just as the fixer walked into the hospital room.
Through the tiny reinforced glass peep-hole of the utility door, I watched the fixer freeze. His eyes locked onto Dr. Evans’ unconscious body bleeding out on the floor, the empty bassinet, and the broken metal IV pole.

"Shit!" the fixer growled into his collar radio. "The mother is awake! She took the child! Lock down the entire facility! Nobody leaves the building alive!"
"Run!" I whispered to Sarah, clutching my baby—whom I had wrapped securely inside a warm flannel blanket—and sprinted into the dim, fluorescent-lit labyrinth of the hospital's underground service corridors.
