Chapter 7 - The Trial of Blood and Duty

The court date was set for a rainy Tuesday morning in mid-November.

The Wake County Family Courthouse was swarming with reporters. Rain lashed against the tall glass windows of Courtroom 4A as Judge Miriam Vance—a stern, sharp woman known for having zero tolerance for high-society games—took her seat on the bench.

I sat at the petitioner’s table beside Luca and Barnaby Coyle. I wore a tailored navy dress, my hair pulled back neatly, holding myself with calm dignity.

Across the aisle sat Derek Morrison, Brittany Hale, and their lead attorney, a slick, silver-haired man named Richard Vance (no relation to me).

Derek looked terrible. His skin was sallow, dark circles hollowed his eyes, and he kept adjusting his collar nervously. Beside him, Brittany sat with her arms crossed, glaring across the room at me.

"Case number 26-JU-4091," the bailiff announced. "In the Matter of Rosalie Vance Moretti."

Richard Vance stepped up to the podium first, clearing his throat with theatrical importance.

"Your Honor," Vance began, gesturing toward Derek. "We are here today on a fundamental matter of natural justice. My client, Mr. Derek Morrison, is the biological father of the minor child, Rosalie. Four weeks ago, while Mr. Morrison was experiencing a brief moment of hesitation due to emotional distress, the respondent, Mr. Luca Moretti—a man with no biological relation to the child—used his immense wealth and intimidation to sign the birth certificate, effectively stealing Mr. Morrison's parental rights."

Judge Vance looked over her glasses at Richard Vance. "Stealing, Mr. Vance? Did Mr. Moretti forge a signature?"

"No, Your Honor, but—"

"Did he force Mr. Morrison out of the building at gunpoint?"

"No, Your Honor, but he coerced—"

"Mr. Morrison left the hospital voluntarily, did he not?" Judge Vance interrupted sharply.

"He... he was overwhelmed, Your Honor!" Vance stammered. "We simply request an order for a mandatory DNA paternity test to establish biological truth."

Judge Vance turned her gaze toward our table. "Mr. Coyle. Your response?"

Barnaby stood up slowly, adjusting his buttoned jacket.

"Your Honor, we do not object to the biological truth," Barnaby said calmly. "If the court wishes to order a DNA test to clarify the record, Mrs. Moretti and Mr. Moretti will comply immediately."

Derek’s lawyer blinked, caught off guard. They had expected us to fight the DNA request frantically.

"However," Barnaby continued, raising a finger, "parental fitness must be evaluated before any interim visitation or custody rights are considered. And on the matter of fitness, we submit Exhibit D."

Barnaby handed a heavy blue binder to the bailiff, who passed it up to the judge.

"What is this?" Judge Vance asked, flipping open the binder.

"Those are certified records from the North Carolina Department of Insurance and the State Bureau of Investigation," Barnaby declared, his voice echoing across the silent courtroom. "Documenting an active criminal investigation into Mr. Derek Morrison for structural fraud, tax evasion, and grand larceny related to his commercial building projects."

Derek gasped, his head snapping toward his lawyer. "What?!"

Brittany turned to Derek, her eyes wide with sudden panic. "Derek... what is he talking about?"

Before Richard Vance could object, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.

Three agents from the State Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by two uniformed Raleigh police officers, walked down the aisle.

"Your Honor," the lead SBI agent announced, stopping at the bar. "We apologize for the intrusion, but we hold an active arrest warrant for Mr. Derek Morrison issued by the Superior Court."

"No!" Derek shrieked, jumping out of his chair. "No! This is a setup! Moretti did this!"

"Mr. Morrison, sit down!" Judge Vance barked, slamming her gavel down.

The police officers moved swiftly, grabbing Derek’s arms and pulling them behind his back, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Brittany screamed, standing up so fast her chair knocked over. "Derek! Do something!"

Derek was dragged backward down the aisle, sobbing and babbling incoherently. As he passed our table, he looked at Luca with absolute, terrified ruin in his eyes.

Luca didn't even look at him. He kept his eyes fixed forward, his hand resting securely over mine on the wooden table.

Judge Vance watched the doors close behind the officers, then looked down at the court documents before her. She picked up her pen and signed the final order with a sharp, decisive stroke.

"In light of the criminal proceedings," Judge Vance ruled calmly, "the petition for paternity modification and custody by Mr. Morrison is denied with prejudice. Mr. Luca Moretti remains the sole legal father of Rosalie Vance Moretti. Court is adjourned."

The gavel came down.

I leaned my head against Luca’s shoulder, a long, trembling breath finally escaping my chest as tears of relief spilled down my cheeks.

It was over. My daughter was safe.
