Chapter 10 - The Name We Chose

One year later.

The sun was warm over the hills of Tuscany, Italy.

We were staying at the Moretti family's private villa in San Gimignano—a breathtaking stone estate perched on a hill surrounded by endless vineyards and olive groves.

It was late afternoon.

I sat on the stone terrace, wearing a sun dress, sipping fresh lemonade while reading a book.

Nearby, nineteen-month-old Rosalie was running barefoot across the soft green grass, her dark curls bouncing as she chased a tiny golden retriever puppy Luca had bought her for her first birthday. Her joyful laughter echoed across the quiet valley.

"Rosalie! Slow down, piccola!" Luca’s voice called out from the terrace steps.

I turned my head to look at my husband.

Luca stepped out into the sunlight, wearing a casual linen shirt and linen trousers. He walked over to Rosalie, sweeping her up into his arms, tossing her gently into the air while she squealed with delight before cuddling her against his chest.

He walked over to my chair, kneeling beside me, kissing my cheek softly before resting his chin on my shoulder, watching our daughter play with his shirt buttons.

"She has your eyes, you know," Luca murmured, watching Rosalie smile.

"She has your determination," I countered with a soft laugh, leaning my head back against his shoulder. "She refused to go to sleep last night until you read her that third storybook."

"A Moretti does not compromise on bedtime stories," Luca said solemnly, though his eyes were twinkling with deep humor.

I looked out over the rolling golden hills of Italy, feeling a profound, deep sense of completeness settling over my soul.

Two years ago, I was standing barefoot on a cold hospital tile floor, holding my aching stomach, watching a man discard my daughter because he lacked the courage to be a father. I had thought my life was over. I had thought we were broken beyond repair.

I hadn't known that heartbreak was simply the painful clearing of a path toward something infinitely greater.

Rosalie wriggled out of Luca’s arms, dropping to the grass and running back toward her puppy, her clear, ringing laughter floating through the summer air.

Luca wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, pulling me back against his warm chest, resting his chin on top of my head.

"What are you thinking about, my love?" Luca asked softly.

I reached up, placing my hands over his, tracing the simple silver wedding band on his finger.

"I’m thinking about the birth certificate," I whispered with a smile.

Luca chuckled softly, his breath warm against my neck. "The empty space?"

May you like

"It was never empty, Luca," I said, turning in his arms to look up into the dark, beautiful eyes of the man who had given us everything. "It was just waiting for the right father to claim it."

Luca smiled, leaning down to press his lips against mine in the quiet heat of the Italian sun, while our daughter’s laughter filled the air around us—a sweet, perfect song of a family built not by chance, but by love.
