Chapter 5 - Unmasked at the Ball

The Grand Ballroom at the Ritz-Carlton was blindingly bright.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the soaring ceilings, throwing light across hundreds of guests dressed in tuxedos and designer gowns. Champagne flowed, string quartets played, and the high-society elite of Raleigh mingled near the grand stage.

At the center of the room stood Derek Morrison and Brittany Hale.

Brittany was dressed in a billowing white gown designed to accentuate her slight baby bump, smiling broadly for the press photographers. Beside her, Derek looked uncomfortable, forcing a smile whenever Benjamin Hale—a tall, white-haired man with cold, calculating eyes—introduced him to potential investors.

Suddenly, the ambient chatter in the ballroom began to die down.

It started near the main entrance and spread like a wave across the room. Photographers turned their cameras away from the stage. Conversations stopped mid-sentence.

Luca Moretti had entered the room.

And beside him, her hand resting gracefully on his arm, was me.

Gasps echoed through the crowd. Whispers erupted instantly:

"Is that Emma Vance? Derek's ex?" "Look at those emeralds... those are from the Moretti vault!" "She looks stunning... she doesn't look like someone who just had a baby a month ago!"

Derek turned toward the door, his glass of champagne freezing halfway to his mouth. His eyes widened in absolute, horrifying shock as he saw me. His gaze moved from my face down to my gown, then to my hand resting intimately on Luca’s arm.

Brittany’s face contorted into a mask of pure fury. "What is she doing here?!" she hissed loudly.

Benjamin Hale’s eyes narrowed as Luca and I glided effortlessly into the center of the ballroom. Luca moved with supreme confidence, completely ignoring the flashing camera bulbs around us.

"Mr. Hale," Luca announced, his smooth voice easily carrying across the quieted room as we approached the host's circle. "Congratulations on the gala. I brought a special guest."

Benjamin Hale stepped forward, his expression tight. "Luca. I didn't expect you to accept the invitation, considering our recent... contractual disagreements."

"Business is business, Benjamin," Luca replied coolly. "And I never miss an opportunity to celebrate family."

Derek stepped forward, his face flushed red with humiliation and jealousy. He looked at me, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Emma... what is this? You come to my fiancée’s event wearing that? You're parading yourself around with him?"

I looked at Derek, feeling absolutely nothing—no anger, no pain, no nostalgia. Just pity.

"I am attending a public event with the man who accepted my daughter when you threw her away, Derek," I said, my voice echoing clearly for the surrounding guests to hear.

Several women in the crowd gasped, covering their mouths.

Brittany snapped, taking a furious step toward me. "Listen here, you little gold-digger! You trapped Derek for three years, and now you’ve manipulated Mr. Moretti into thinking that bastard child is his!"

SLAP!

The sound echoed through the entire ballroom like a gunshot.

It wasn't Luca who had moved.

It was me.

My hand was still raised, my palm burning, while Brittany stumbled back into Derek’s arms, holding her bright red cheek in absolute shock.

"Do not," I said, my voice dropping into a register of lethal authority that mirrored Luca's, "ever call my daughter a bastard again. She has a name. She has a father. And she has a mother who will tear down anyone who disrespects her."

The ballroom was dead silent.

Benjamin Hale looked as though he was about to burst a blood vessel. "Security!" he roared. "Remove this woman!"

Before any gallery security could step forward, four of Luca’s personal guards instantly surrounded us, their coats shifting to reveal the leather holsters beneath.

Luca stepped in front of me, glaring down at Benjamin Hale with eyes of ice.

"If any man lays a finger on Emma," Luca warned softly, "I will burn every asset the Hale Corporation owns by midnight tomorrow. Try me, Benjamin."

Benjamin Hale froze, his eyes darting to the armed guards, then to the press photographers who were frantically capturing every single second of the confrontation.

Luca turned to me, offering his arm with a soft, proud smile. "Shall we go, Emma? The company here is rather disappointing."

May you like

I placed my hand on his arm. "Lead the way, Luca."

We turned and walked out of the ballroom, leaving Derek, Brittany, and the Hale family standing in the ashes of their public embarrassment.
