Chapter 1 - The Signature That Shook the World

The silence in the maternity ward hall became absolute.

The nurse behind the counter, a woman named Nurse Gable who had worked at St. Jude’s Hospital for over twenty years, stood frozen. Her eyes darted from the heavy silver pen in Luca Moretti’s gloved fingers to the birth certificate resting on her clipboard.

"Mr... Mr. Moretti," she stammered, her voice barely a whisper. "Sir, legally... if you are not the biological father, signing this document carries immense legal, financial, and personal obligations."

Luca did not look up from the document. His sharp, dark eyes scanned the legal lines with the cold precision of a man signing a multi-million-dollar contract.

"I am aware of the law, Nurse Gable," Luca said, his deep voice carrying that distinct, velvet-covered steel. "Write my name. Luca Vance Moretti."

My heart hammered against my ribs so violently I thought my fresh stitches would split open. I moved away from the nursery glass, taking two agonizingly slow, painful steps toward him. "Wait—stop. Mr. Moretti, please... you don't even know me. You don't know my daughter."

Luca turned his head toward me. Up close, his features were carved with lethal symmetry. The thin pale scar cutting through his left eyebrow added a dangerous edge to a face that belonged in a museum. His dark eyes locked onto mine, and for the first time in three days, I didn't feel the suffocating weight of being abandoned.

"I know enough, Emma," he said, using my name as if he had known it for years. "I know a man just walked out on a child because he feared his mistress’s fragile vanity. I know that without a legal father listed on this paper today, the state will hold her status in administrative limbo, and Derek Morrison’s attorneys will use that delay to file for pre-emptive custody restrictions."

I blinked, stunned. "How do you know who Derek is?"

The broad-shouldered man standing behind Luca—a man dressed in a charcoal suit whose silence was as heavy as a vault door—stepped forward slightly. Luca raised a single hand, stopping him.

"I know Derek Morrison because his architectural firm has been begging for a contract with Moretti Holdings for six months," Luca said smoothly. He lowered the pen to the paper and signed his name in bold, flowing script. "And now, he will learn what happens when you discard what is priceless."

Nurse Gable pressed her seal onto the document, her hands trembling so hard the stamp rattled against the desk. "It’s... it’s official. The child’s legal name is registered."

"What is her name, Emma?" Luca asked, looking back at me.

My throat felt dry, choked with a mixture of terror, exhaustion, and an overwhelming surge of protective fiercely fierce love. "Rosalie," I whispered. "Rosalie Vance."

"Rosalie Vance Moretti," Luca corrected gently, turning to look back through the nursery window at the tiny girl sleeping beneath her pink blanket. "A strong name."

"Why are you doing this?" I asked, gripping the counter to keep my knees from buckling. "Nobody does something like this for free. Men like you... you don't step out of the shadows to save strangers without a price."

Luca handed the silver pen back to his silent bodyguard. He stepped closer to me, bringing with him the faint scents of rain, expensive cedarwood, and tobacco. He didn't touch me, but his presence was an unyielding shield between me and the cold hospital corridor.

"You are correct, Emma. Nothing in this world is free," Luca murmured, his dark eyes burning into mine. "Derek Morrison thinks he can cast you aside to build an empire with the Hale family. He believes he is stepping into light and power. But tomorrow morning, the newspapers will announce that the heir to Moretti Holdings has just claimed a daughter."

"And what does that mean for me?" I asked, my voice trembling.

"It means," Luca said, stepping aside as two private security guards in black suits stepped out of the elevators at the end of the hall, "that as of five minutes ago, you and Rosalie are under my personal protection. Derek Morrison wanted a war. I have just given him one he cannot win."
