Chapter 4 - The Gala of Wolves

Four weeks passed in a blur of quiet recovery.
Inside Blackwood Manor, Rosalie thrived. She gained weight, her cheeks grew rosy, and her soft cries were always met with immediate care by Mrs. Gable and a team of private pediatric nurses Luca had hired. My own body healed, the physical trauma of childbirth giving way to renewed strength.
During those weeks, I saw a different side of Luca Moretti.
To the outside world, he was the ruthless CEO of Moretti Holdings—a man feared by politicians, corporate rivals, and city officials alike. But late at night, I would often catch him standing by the nursery crib in his rolled-up shirt sleeves, watching Rosalie sleep with a quiet, protective reverence that took my breath away.
He never forced himself into my space. He treated me with an exquisite, old-world chivalry that I had never experienced with Derek.
Then, the invitation arrived.
It was a heavy, gold-embossed envelope delivered to the dining table during breakfast.
THE ANNUAL RALEIGH HERITAGE BAL Hosted by the Hale Development Corporation.
"They invited you?" I asked, looking up from my tea as Luca scanned the card.
"They invited us," Luca corrected, setting the card down. "Benjamin Hale is holding this gala to celebrate his daughter Brittany’s engagement to Derek Morrison, as well as to announce their new residential development project."
I felt a cold knot form in my stomach. "They want to show off. They want to prove that Derek’s firm wasn't destroyed by the scandal."
"They want to attempt a public power display," Luca said, a dangerous glint appearing in his eyes. "Benjamin Hale believes that if he throws enough money at the city’s elite, people will forget that his new son-in-law abandoned his newborn daughter."
"Are you going?"
Luca looked at me, his eyes sweeping over my face. "Only if you are ready to walk into that room with me, Emma."
"Me?" I gasped. "Luca, I haven't been to a public event in months. Brittany will be there. Derek will be there."
"And you will be there," Luca said, leaning across the table, "wearing emeralds, standing on my arm, showing every person in this city that you are no longer the victim of Derek Morrison's cowardice. You are the woman who commands the respect of the Moretti family."
My heart pounded, but a spark of dormant fire ignited in my chest. For three years, I had shrunk myself to fit into Derek’s world. I had stayed silent while his family belittled me, stayed quiet while he hid me in the shadows.
"I’ll go," I said, my voice ringing clear. "I’m not hiding anymore."
Three days later, a team of high-end stylists arrived at Blackwood Manor.
By seven o'clock that evening, I stood before the full-length mirror in the master bedroom dressing area. I wore an off-the-shoulder gown of emerald green silk that hugged my curves perfectly, cascading down into a subtle train. My dark hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, and around my neck hung a teardrop emerald necklace from the Moretti family vaults.
When I walked down the grand staircase into the main hall, Luca was waiting at the bottom.
He wore a custom black tuxedo that made him look impossibly dangerous and regal. When he looked up and saw me, his breath caught. For three long seconds, the most feared man in North Carolina simply stared at me, speechlessly.

"Emma..." he murmured, his voice husky as he stepped forward to offer me his arm. "You are... magnificent."
"Thank you, Luca," I whispered, resting my hand on his arm, feeling the rock-solid muscle beneath his jacket. "Let's go face the wolves."
