Chapter 7 - The Convoy Arrives

Before Richard could order the guards to throw them out, a low, thrumming rumble echoed outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the ballroom.
The lights inside the hall flickered slightly as a massive convoy pulled into the country club’s private driveway.
Eight heavy black armored SUVs with blacked-out windows, flanked by state police motorcycle escorts, swept into the turning circle. At the center of the convoy was a massive, custom-built armored limousine bearing foreign diplomatic flags—a golden double-headed eagle against a field of royal blue.
The country club’s private security guards stood frozen as dozens of armed federal agents and foreign royal guards in high-collared dress uniforms stepped out of the SUVs, establishing a perimeter around the entrance.
Inside the ballroom, guests rushed to the windows.
"What is that?" someone whispered. "Is that the Governor?"

Richard Whitmore’s glass of bourbon slipped slightly in his hand.
