Chapter 4 - The Tipping Point
The night before the Legacy Gala, Richard Whitmore escalated his attack.
At a private board dinner, he successfully passed a resolution revoking Claire’s academic privileges immediately, citing "unresolved behavioral disputes." Furthermore, he purchased the apartment building in Rogers Park where Evelyn and Claire lived, issuing a thirty-day eviction notice under the guise of commercial redevelopment.
Vanessa delivered the news to Claire personally in the school cafeteria, dropping the eviction notice onto Claire's lunch tray.
"My dad bought your building," Vanessa sneered, her friends laughing behind her. "Consider it a early graduation present. You have thirty days to find another slum."
Claire looked up at Vanessa. For weeks, she had felt small, ashamed, and helpless. But hearing her mother's revelation the night before had changed something inside her. She looked at Vanessa not with fear, but with pity.
"You really think you own the world, don't you?" Claire said softly.

"We own your world," Vanessa replied, leaning in. "You're nothing, Claire. Tomorrow night is the Legacy Gala, and you won't even be allowed through the door."
"I'll be there," Claire said quietly, stacking her tray. "And Vanessa? Make sure your father wears his finest suit. He's going to need it."
