Chapter 1 - The Phone Call in the Dark

The small two-bedroom apartment in Rogers Park felt colder than usual. Claire lay in the dark, her back pressed against the wall, listening to the muffled tone of her mother’s voice coming from the kitchen.
Evelyn’s native language was usually quiet and melodic, but tonight it carried an authoritative edge Claire had never heard before.
“The situation has changed,” Evelyn whispered in clear English, before switching back to a foreign tongue. Her tone was sharp, precise, and entirely unyielding.
In the hallway, Claire sat up on her mattress. For seventeen years, she had believed her mother was simply a soft-spoken seamstress from Eastern Europe who survived on hard work, tea, and cheap alteration fees. But the woman talking on the phone in the dark didn't sound like a seamstress. She sounded like a commander issuing orders to a high-ranking officer.
When the kitchen light clicked off, Claire waited three minutes before slipping out of bed. She found her mother standing by the window, watching the rain strike the glass, holding a silver signet ring that Claire had never seen her wear before.
"Who were you talking to, Mom?" Claire asked softly from the doorway.
Evelyn didn't flinch. She placed the ring back into her pocket with a fluid, practiced motion. "Go back to bed, Claire. You have exams tomorrow."
"No," Claire said, stepping into the dim moonlight. "Not tonight. You said he's been fighting his way back to us for seventeen years. Who is he? Is he in trouble? Are we in trouble?"
Evelyn turned. Her eyes were shadowed, but her posture was rigid. "Richard Whitmore thinks money gives him the right to crush people. He thinks because we live in a rented apartment and eat soup on Tuesdays, we are helpless. He is wrong. But you need to trust me for twenty-eight more days."
May you like
"Why twenty-eight days?"
"Because that is the night of the Legacy Gala," Evelyn said quietly. "And because after seventeen years of war, your father's enemies have finally been cleared from the board."
