Chapter 8 - Awakening

Two days later, the afternoon sunlight streamed gently through the blinds of the VIP recovery suite.
Nathan stirred, his eyelids fluttering open. The harsh glare of the overhead lights was replaced by the soft hum of monitors and the quiet, steady rhythm of artificial life support doing the work his body could no longer manage alone.
He turned his head slowly.
Sitting in the chair beside his bed, fast asleep with her head resting on the edge of the mattress, was Eliana. Her fingers were tightly intertwined with his. On the bedside table sat a small, sparkling glass of water—and beside it, resting on a clean napkin, was a single nickel.
Nathan’s lips curved into a weak, emotional smile. He moved his thumb, brushing lightly against Eliana’s hand.
Eliana instantly jerked awake, her eyes wide. When she saw his gaze fixed on her, alive and lucid, her breath hitched.
"Nathan," she whispered, a fresh wave of tears spilling over her lashes. "You're awake."
"Of course I am," Nathan rasped, his voice rough from the breathing tube. "Did you really think I’d break my promise to watch you grow up?"
Eliana laughed through her tears, shaking her head. "You had me terrified."
Nathan looked down at the nickel on the table, then back up into the fiercely loving eyes of the young woman who had just saved his life.
"What's that for?" Nathan asked softly.
Eliana picked up the coin, pressing it gently into his palm, closing his fingers over it just as she had done fifteen years ago in aisle seven of Bellway Market.
May you like
"Payment in full," Eliana whispered, smiling brightly as the morning light illuminated the room. "Plus interest."
Nathan closed his fingers around the coin, feeling the unbreakable circle of kindness finally close. He had bought a little girl a glass of milk when she had nothing, and in return, she had given him back his life.
