Chapter 4 - Years of Growth

The years that followed transformed the penthouse into a home filled with laughter, homework papers scattered across granite countertops, and the chaotic joy of growing children.

Eliana blossomed into an extraordinary young woman. True to her sharp mind and fierce sense of justice, she skipped two grades and set her sights on a future in corporate law and financial ethics. She never forgot where she came from, volunteering regularly at youth shelters and mentoring children who had lost their footing in the world.

Nathan watched her graduate high school as valedictorian from the front row, his eyes stinging with unaccustomed tears. When Eliana walked across the stage to accept her medal, she didn't look at the crowd; she looked straight at Nathan and gave a subtle, knowing nod.

By nineteen, Eliana was attending Columbia University on a full academic scholarship, working part-time as an intern in corporate compliance—ironically, right inside Caldwell National Foods. She refused special treatment, insisting on earning every promotion through sheer grit and brilliance.

Nathan, now fifty-eight, noticed a quiet shift in his own health. The decades of relentless work, combined with the stress of the past legal battles, began to take a toll. A persistent fatigue settled into his bones, and occasional sharp pains in his chest forced him to slow down. He kept it hidden from Eliana, not wanting to worry the young woman who had already carried too much.

Meanwhile, Eli and Noah were strapping, energetic teenagers tearing up soccer fields and dreaming of engineering school. The shadows of their past had faded into distant memories, replaced by the warmth of a genuine family.

But fate, which had bound Nathan and Eliana together in aisle seven all those years ago, had one final, terrifying test in store.
