Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Weeks turned into months. Under Claire’s watchful eye and Nathan’s quiet, steadfast protection, the twins—Eli and Noah—grew healthy and strong, taking their first wobbly steps across the plush rugs of the penthouse. Eliana was enrolled in a prestigious private preparatory school under an alias, where her sharp intellect quickly astonished her teachers.

Yet, the threat of Richard Vance loomed like a dark cloud.

Nathan’s legal team worked day and night, but Vance’s web of shell companies seemed impenetrable. Every time they traced a fraudulent transaction, it vanished into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.

One late night, while reviewing financial statements in his home study, Nathan rubbed his burning eyes. The glowing screens reflected a maze of figures he couldn't crack.

A soft knock sounded at the door. Eliana pushed it open, carrying a mug of hot cocoa. She was ten years old now, taller, with her hair tied back in a neat ponytail.

"You're working too late," she said, mimicking Claire's exact tone of voice, which made Nathan chuckle.

She set the mug down on the desk and glanced at the complex financial spreadsheets covering the monitors. She didn't walk away. Instead, her eyes scanned rows of numbers representing Vance’s subsidiary logistics firms—the very same supply chain companies Nathan competed with.

"What are those?" Eliana asked, pointing a small finger at a column of repeating data.

"Just a headache, kiddo. Digital ghosts. Vance is hiding money where we can't see it."

Eliana tilted her head, studying the patterns. "Why are there so many zeros at the end of the shipping weights? In my math class, if the cargo weight doesn't match the truck capacity, the teacher marks it wrong because something is missing."

Nathan froze. He stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat.

The shipping manifests for Vance’s logistics firm showed millions of dollars in supposed "freight loss," but the numbers matched the exact valuation of the trust funds Vance had illegally drained from the orphans. Vance wasn't just hiding money in offshore accounts; he was laundering it through physical logistics discrepancies in real-time supply chain receipts—the exact industry Nathan dominated.

"Eliana," Nathan whispered, grabbing her shoulders with wide eyes. "You just found what my forensic accountants missed for six months."

Using the breakthrough, Nathan’s team spent forty-eight hours compiling an airtight federal indictment. By dawn, federal agents raided Richard Vance’s offices, freezing his assets and slapping him with charges of fraud, embezzlement, and child endangerment.

The empire built on greed collapsed overnight.
