Chapter 5 - The Collapse

It was a crisp November afternoon, exactly fifteen years to the day since Nathan had stood in Bellway Market holding a handful of loose coins.

Caldwell National Foods was hosting its annual charity gala at a grand hotel ballroom in Manhattan, celebrating a massive endowment fund established to support orphaned and displaced children—a foundation spearheaded entirely by Eliana.

Hundreds of industry leaders, politicians, and journalists filled the glittering hall.

Nathan stood backstage, adjusting his tie, feeling a strange, heavy tightness pressing against his chest. He took a deep breath, telling himself it was just exhaustion from the pre-event preparations. He walked out onto the stage to warm applause, stepping up to the podium to deliver the keynote address.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Nathan began, his voice echoing smoothly through the microphone. "Fifteen years ago, I believed success was measured entirely in contracts, balance sheets, and empires..."

Suddenly, the room spun violently.

The words dissolved into a muffled roar in his ears. A blinding, white-hot pain tore through his chest, stealing his breath. Nathan gripped the edges of the wooden podium as his knees buckled.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom. Before he could hit the mahogany stage floor, darkness rushed in, swallowing him whole.

Panic erupted. The auditorium plunged into chaotic shouting.

"Call an ambulance! Someone help him!"

Backstage, Eliana dropped her notes. Hearing the commotion and recognizing the collective gasp of the crowd, she sprinted around the curtain.

Her heart stopped.

Nathan lay motionless on the stage floor, his face pale and gray. Paramedics rushed through the side doors with emergency equipment, shouting orders as they knelt beside him.

"Cardiac arrest! His pulse is fading fast! Clear the area!"

Eliana pushed through the panicked crowd of executives, her chest heaving, tears instantly blurring her vision. "Move! Let me through! That's my father!" she screamed, her voice cutting through the noise with absolute authority.

She dropped to her knees beside the stretcher as the medics hoisted Nathan up. She grabbed his cold, limp hand, squeezing it with all her might, just as she had held onto him in the grocery store aisle fifteen years ago.

"Don't you dare leave me, Nathan Caldwell," she whispered fiercely, her voice breaking. "You promised you’d stay."
