Chapter 7 - The Unraveling Scandal

At 9:00 AM the following morning, the storm over Storm Haven had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, crystal-blue sky over the sparkling ocean. But in the city, a psychological hurricane was about to shatter the high-society elite.
In the grand conference room on the top floor of Hastings Enterprises, Richard Cole sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, flanked by his legal team and Vanessa, who was wearing a black designer suit designed to project an image of dignified grief. Surrounding them were twelve members of the board of directors, looking anxious and uncertain.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Richard Cole announced, slamming a stack of legal papers onto the table. "Adrian Hastings has officially gone rogue. He has fled state jurisdiction to an off-the-grid island with a domestic servant, refusing to comply with court orders. His irrational behavior threatens the stability of this company and its stock value. I move that we vote immediately to remove him as CEO under the incapacity clause!"
"I wouldn't call that vote just yet, Richard," a deep, commanding voice resonated through the conference room’s surround-sound speakers.
The large video wall at the end of the room suddenly flickered to life.
Sitting on a plush sofa in a sunlit room at Storm Haven was Adrian Hastings. Beside him sat Rosa Delgado, dressed in an elegant cream-colored blazer, looking poised and regal. On Rosa’s lap sat Mia, swinging her small legs and drawing on a pad of paper.
"Adrian!" Richard Cole snapped, standing up and pointing an angry finger at the screen. "This broadcast is an outrage! You are in contempt of court!"
"I am in full compliance with federal law, Richard," Adrian replied coolly through the video feed. "And I suggest you sit down before you suffer a medical emergency."
Vanessa scoffed, stepping closer to the screen. "Adrian, stop this pathetic charade! Nobody believes your story about this maid’s child! You are ruining your life for a scam!"
"Am I?" Adrian asked smoothly. "Dr. Lin, please step into the frame."
Dr. Sarah Lin, holding a certified, sealed legal document bearing the official seal of the Massachusetts State Forensic Laboratory, walked into the camera frame and stood beside Adrian.
"Members of the board," Dr. Lin spoke clearly into the microphone. "I have personally conducted a full three-way genetic comparison between DNA samples extracted from Mia Delgado, Adrian Hastings, and verified hair follicle samples from the late Julianne Hastings."
The board members leaned forward, breathless silence falling over the massive room. Richard Cole’s face began to lose its color.
"The results are absolute," Dr. Lin declared, holding up the certified document. "The probability of maternity between Julianne Hastings and Mia Delgado is 99.998 percent. Mia Delgado is, beyond any scientific or legal doubt, the biological daughter of Julianne Hastings and the late David Vance."
A wave of loud gasps and panicked chatter erupted among the board members.
"No... no, that’s impossible! It’s a fake! She was bribed!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking with hysterics as she looked around at the board members. "Dad, tell them it’s fake!"
Richard Cole dropped heavily back into his leather chair, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"Furthermore," Adrian’s voice sliced through the chaos like a razor blade. "Under the terms of my father’s trust, forty percent of all voting shares in Hastings Enterprises are now officially transferred to the irrevocable trust established for Mia Delgado, with myself serving as sole executor. Combined with my personal twenty-five percent stake, I now hold controlling interest in this corporation."
Adrian leaned forward, staring directly into the camera lens, his eyes locking onto Richard Cole.
"Which brings me to my first official motion as controlling shareholder," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I move for the immediate, permanent removal of Richard Cole from the board of directors, and the termination of all supply contracts with Cole Enterprises."
"You can't do this to us!" Vanessa screamed, running up to the screen. "We made you! My family supported your father for decades!"
"And finally," Adrian continued, completely ignoring her outburst, "let us address the question of Miss Vanessa Cole’s character."
With a click of a button from Adrian’s end, the video wall split into two screens.
The second screen began playing the crystal-clear, unedited high-definition security footage from the ballroom two nights prior. The board members watched in horrific silence as Vanessa snatched three-year-old Mia by her arm, grabbed a pair of silver shears, and callously cut off the child’s curls while laughing at Rosa’s desperate pleas.
The cruelty of the act was laid bare for the entire corporate leadership to see.
"Oh my God," one of the elderly female board members gasped, covering her face in disgust. "She hurt a child."
"This video," Adrian stated, "along with full security camera footage from last night showing three armed mercenaries hired by Cole Security attempting to abduct my niece from Storm Haven, has just been delivered to the District Attorney’s office and every major news network in North America."

Vanessa fell to her knees on the plush carpet of the boardroom, clutching her head as tears of pure, ruinous humiliation streamed down her face. Her social standing, her family's reputation, and her father’s corporate empire had been completely obliterated in less than ten minutes.
"Security," Adrian ordered through the feed, looking at the security guards standing at the boardroom doors. "Escort Mr. Cole and Miss Cole out of the building. They are barred from entering any Hastings property for the rest of their lives."
