Chapter 2 - The Shattered Engagement

When Adrian descended the grand marble staircase, he was no longer the polite, reserved billionaire host the high-society guests were accustomed to. His presence radiated a lethal, quiet authority that immediately halted the chaotic murmurings in the foyer. Behind him walked Rosa, holding Mia close to her chest.

Vanessa Cole was standing near the grand piano, surrounded by her wealthy parents and a small circle of lingering high-society elites who had refused to leave without knowing how the drama would unfold. She was fanning herself with a lace handkerchief, looking irritated rather than remorseful.

"Adrian, finally!" Vanessa snapped, taking a step toward him with her hand outstretched. "This evening has been an absolute disaster. The staff is entirely out of control! That woman dropped a tray of expensive champagne, and her brat caused an absolute scene in front of the board members. You need to fire her immediately and call security to escort them off the property!"

Adrian didn't stop until he was standing directly in front of Vanessa. The temperature in the room seemed to drop by ten degrees.

"Did you enjoy it, Vanessa?" Adrian asked softly.

Vanessa blinked, thrown off by his calm, low tone. "What?"

"Did you enjoy humiliating a three-year-old child?" Adrian stepped closer, his shadow completely eclipsing her. "Did it make you feel powerful to take a pair of scissors to a helpless little girl who couldn't defend herself?"

"Oh, don't be dramatic, Adrian," Vanessa scoffed, though a flicker of panic crossed her eyes at his cold expression. "She was running around in her filthy little shoes, ruining the ambiance. I was simply teaching the mother a lesson about boundaries. People of that class need to know their place. Besides, I am about to become the mistress of this estate. I have every right to enforce order."

"You will never be the mistress of this estate," Adrian said, his voice ringing through the silent foyer like a death knell.

Vanessa’s father, Richard Cole, a major shareholder in Hastings Enterprises, stepped forward, his face flushed with indignation. "Now see here, Hastings! You can't speak to my daughter like that over a minor domestic incident! This engagement unites two of the largest firms in the state. You will not ruin a multi-billion-dollar merger over a maid!"

"The engagement is over," Adrian declared coldly, taking off his platinum engagement ring and dropping it unceremoniously into the half-empty glass of champagne Richard was holding.

A collective gasp echoed through the remaining guests. Vanessa stared at the ring sitting at the bottom of the glass, her face turning crimson with rage and humiliation.

"You are breaking up with me... for them?" Vanessa shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at Rosa and Mia. "Have you lost your mind, Adrian?! She is a servant! A nobody! Her daughter is a parasite!"

"Watch your tongue," Adrian warned, his eyes narrowing into slits. "Because the child you just assaulted... is Julianne’s daughter."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Richard Cole dropped his champagne glass. It shattered against the floor, mirroring the mess Rosa had made earlier. Vanessa froze, her mouth agape, as her gaze slowly snapped from Adrian to the little girl shivering in Rosa’s arms.

"That’s... that’s impossible," Richard stammered, his voice trembling. "Julianne died in Seattle three years ago! The baby died in her womb! The police reports confirmed it!"

"The police reports were wrong," Adrian said, stepping sideways to stand beside Rosa and Mia, forming an unbroken wall. "Rosa Delgado survived that crash. She delivered my sister’s baby on the side of the road and kept her safe from the vultures who drove my sister away in the first place. Mia is Julianne’s daughter. She is my niece. And under my father’s will, she is the sole heiress to forty percent of Hastings Enterprises."

Vanessa’s face went completely pale. The reality of what she had done hit her like a physical blow. She hadn't just humiliated a maid’s child; she had publicly assaulted the principal heir to one of the vastest fortunes in the country, in front of dozens of high-society witnesses.

"Adrian... darling, I didn't know," Vanessa stammered, her voice dropping an octave as she took a desperate step forward, her eyes brimming with fake tears. "I swear I didn't know! If I had known she was your family, I would never—"

"That’s what makes you a monster, Vanessa," Adrian cut her off, his voice laced with profound disgust. "You only respect people if you think they hold power over you. If you think someone is helpless, you feel entitled to crush them."

Adrian turned to the head of his security team, who was standing quietly near the entrance. "Marcus."

"Yes, Mr. Hastings?"

"Escort Mr. Cole, Miss Cole, and their family off my property immediately. If any of them set foot on Hastings land again, have them arrested for trespassing."

"You can't do this!" Richard Cole roared, his face turning purple. "I hold fifteen percent of your board’s stock! I will destroy you at the next quarterly meeting! I will drag your family's name through the mud!"

"Try it, Richard," Adrian replied with a chilling smile. "And I will release the unedited security footage of your daughter assaulting a minor to every media outlet in the nation before midnight. Let’s see what that does to your stock prices tomorrow morning."

Richard choked on his words. He gripped his daughter’s arm tightly, pulling her back. Vanessa looked at Adrian with a mix of fury and despair, but Adrian didn't look at her again. He turned his back on them entirely, focusing all his attention on Rosa and Mia.

"Marcus," Adrian added quietly. "Call my personal physician. Have him come to the estate immediately to check on Mia. And prepare the master guest suite on the second floor."

May you like

"The master suite, sir?" Marcus asked, surprised.

"Yes," Adrian said firmly, looking into Rosa’s shocked eyes. "Rosa and Mia aren't staying in the staff quarters another night. They are family."
