Chapter 6 - The Siege of Storm Haven

The storm outside intensified as night fell over the Atlantic, bringing heavy fog and blinding rain that obscured the jagged coastline of Storm Haven. Inside the manor, the atmosphere was tense but disciplined. Adrian had ordered the house’s heavy wooden shutters secured and dispatched three of his elite, trusted private security personnel to patrol the perimeter of the island.

Rosa sat in the living room, teaching Mia how to draw animals with a set of colored pencils Evelyn had found in an old chest. Despite the danger lurking out in the dark waters, Rosa maintained a calm, smiling exterior for Mia’s sake.

"Look, Mama! It’s a bunny with big ears!" Mia giggled, holding up a crooked drawing of a pink rabbit.

"It’s beautiful, mi amor," Rosa smiled, kissing Mia’s cheek. "Just like your rabbit."

Adrian walked into the room, wearing a tactical rain jacket. He looked focused, his eyes sharp and alert.

"Is everything okay out there?" Rosa asked, setting down her pencil.

"A private yacht is anchored about two miles off our southern shore, just outside our territorial waters," Adrian said quietly, so as not to startle Mia. "They’re using the fog as cover. They won't risk a landing in this weather, but Richard Cole is getting desperate. He knows the DNA results will be ready tomorrow morning."

"What is he trying to do?"

"He wants to intimidate us," Adrian explained, leaning against the back of the sofa. "If he can create a panic or force us to leave the island before the results are announced, he can control the narrative. But he underestimates how well-fortified this place is."

Suddenly, the lights inside the house flickered, surged once, and then went completely dark.

The soft hum of the central heating died instantly. The only light remaining came from the dying embers of the fireplace and the emergency LED guide lights along the baseboards.

Rosa immediately pulled Mia into her lap, her heart pounding against her ribs. "Adrian?"

"Stay down," Adrian ordered sharply, pulling a high-powered tactical flashlight and a concealed sidearm from inside his jacket. "Evelyn, get the backup generator online!"

"The generator control panel is in the basement, Master Adrian!" Evelyn’s voice called out from the dark kitchen.

"I’ll go with her," Rosa volunteered, standing up with Mia held tightly in her arms. "I’m not staying upstairs alone."

"Alright," Adrian said, his tone authoritative and protective. "Follow me closely. Marcus is watching the external monitors, but someone cut the main submarine power cable connecting the island to the mainland. They are already on the island."

They moved quickly down the stone stairs into the spacious basement. The air was cool and smelled of sea salt and old wood. Adrian led the way with his tactical flashlight, its bright beam cutting through the thick darkness.

As Evelyn reached the heavy metal generator panel and began flipping the emergency breakers, the heavy wooden door at the top of the basement stairs suddenly burst open with a loud CRACK.

Heavy, combat-booted footsteps echoed down the stairwell.

"Adrian Hastings!" a harsh, raspy voice shouted down from the top of the stairs. "We don't want any trouble! Just hand over the woman and the child, and we leave! Mr. Cole just wants a private conversation with them before the lawyers get involved!"

Rosa gasped, backing away into the shadows behind a stack of antique furniture, pressing Mia’s head against her chest so the little girl wouldn't make a sound.

"You're trespassing on private property!" Adrian shouted back, stepping out into the open basement floor, his flashlight beam trained directly on the stairwell. "Leave now, or my security detail will eliminate the threat!"

Three armed men dressed in dark tactical gear descended the stairs, their faces covered by black balaclavas. The leader held a heavy stun device, while the other two carried zip-ties and tactical batons.

"Your security detail outside is currently tied up near the dock, Hastings," the leader sneered, stepping onto the concrete floor. "Now don't make this difficult. The girl comes with us for a temporary 'safekeeping' arrangement."

Before the mercenary could take another step, Adrian moved with terrifying speed.

He didn't fire his weapon; instead, he struck the leader across the jaw with the heavy steel casing of his tactical flashlight, knocking the man off balance. Adrian grabbed the man’s tactical vest, spinning him around and slamming him into the concrete pillar, disarming him instantly.

The second mercenary lunged forward with a baton, but Adrian dodged the blow, sweeping the man’s legs out from under him with a brutal kick. The man hit the ground hard, gasping for air.

The third mercenary pointed his stun device directly at Adrian, but before he could pull the trigger, Rosa acted on pure instinct. She grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from a nearby storage table and swung it with all her strength, striking the man square in the back of the knee.

The mercenary buckled with a roar of pain, dropping the device. Adrian immediately closed the distance, delivering a swift, decisive strike to the man’s temple, knocking him unconscious.

Within less than sixty seconds, all three intruders were neutralized, groaning on the floor.

Evelyn threw the final heavy switch on the control panel, and with a deep mechanical roar, the emergency generator kicked in. Bright halogen lights flooded the basement, revealing the defeated mercenaries lying on the concrete floor.

Adrian stood breathing heavily, his dark eyes sweeping the room until they landed on Rosa, who was still holding the heavy brass candlestick, breathing fast, her eyes wide with adrenaline.

Adrian looked from the unconscious men to Rosa, a faint, incredulous smile touching his lips. "Nice swing, Rosa."

"Nobody touches my daughter," Rosa said, her voice shaking but filled with unyielding steel.

Adrian walked over to her, taking the candlestick gently from her hands and taking her hand in his. "It’s over. Marcus and the local coast guard are already on their way to the dock. They’ve brought reinforceements."

May you like

He looked down at Mia, who peeped out from behind Rosa’s shoulder, looking at the bright lights.

"Tomorrow," Adrian said, his eyes filled with a fierce, burning resolve, "we finish this once and for all."
