Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Moretti

Three weeks passed in a whirlwind of luxurious safety and quiet, intense passion.
Alice’s life had transformed completely. The small, cramped apartment in Providence was replaced by the master wing of the Watch Hill estate. Her days were no longer filled with twelve-hour trauma shifts and cold cafeteria food; instead, she spent her mornings walking Nero along the private white-sand beach, accompanied by two discreet security guards who stayed fifty yards behind her at all times.
Stefano’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous. Guided by Alice’s strict medical regime, his thoracic wound healed cleanly, leaving a thick, pale scar along his left ribs—a permanent reminder of the night his life had changed.
In the evenings, Stefano would return from his business meetings in Boston and Providence, shedding his dark suits and cold demeanor the moment he crossed the threshold. He treated Alice not as a mobster’s mistress, but as his absolute equal—consulting her on security logistics, listening to her sharp assessments of his associates, and treating her with a deep, reverent tenderness that left her breathless.
However, peace in the Marquetti empire was always a temporary illusion.
On a rainy Tuesday evening, while Alice was sitting in the estate library reading a medical journal with Nero resting his head on her lap, the heavy oak doors banged open.
Danny Falcone walked in, his rain-soaked coat dripping onto the oriental rug. His face was pale, his eyes wide with a grave, urgent alarm.
"Stefano," Danny called out as Stefano walked into the library from his private office. "We have a massive problem."
"What is it?" Stefano asked, setting a glass of wine down on the reading table.
"Julian Moretti just crossed the border from Canada," Danny reported, pulling an encrypted tablet from his pocket. "He didn't bring his usual lieutenants. He brought twenty-five hired mercenaries from South America—ex-military contractors equipped with heavy weaponry."
Alice stood up from her chair, her hand instinctively coming down to rest on Nero’s head. "Moretti knows Carmine failed?"
"Moretti knows Carmine is dead," Danny corrected grimly. "And he knows he’s lost his footing in Rhode Island. This isn't a territorial dispute anymore, Stefano. This is a scorched-earth raid. He’s heading straight for this estate right now."
Stefano didn't flinch. He walked to the window, watching the rain lash against the glass as lightning illuminated the dark ocean waves outside.
"How long until they reach the perimeter gate?" Stefano asked quietly.
"Fifteen minutes," Danny replied. "My men are setting up defensive positions at the main driveway, but they have heavy anti-vehicle ordnance, Stefano. If they breach the gates, this house becomes a kill box."
"Then we don't wait for them at the gates," Stefano said, his voice turning into liquid steel. He turned to face Danny and Alice, his dark eyes burning with absolute command. "Danny, evacuate the domestic staff through the south tunnel. Set up the automated perimeter turrets at the perimeter fence."
He walked over to Alice, taking her face in both of his broad hands.
"I need you to take Nero and go down to the subterranean bunker beneath the boathouse," Stefano said softly, his thumbs stroking her cheeks. "It’s reinforced with four feet of lead-lined concrete. No heavy ordnance can breach it."
"No," Alice said instantly, her green eyes flashing with fierce defiance. "I’m not hiding in a cellar while you fight twenty-five mercenaries on your lawn."
"Alice, listen to me—"
"No, you listen to me, Stefano Marquetti!" Alice snapped, grabbing his wrists. "Three weeks ago, I walked past thirty armed men to save your life. I’m not leaving your side now. I have three trauma kits in the medical bay, and if your men get hit, they’re going to need a surgeon, not a empty room!"
Stefano stared at her for three long seconds. The sheer, unbreakable courage in her eyes struck him with the force of a physical blow. A fierce, proud smile broke across his face.

"You really are a terrifying woman, Alice Brennan," Stefano whispered, pressing a hard, burning kiss to her lips.
"I’m your woman," Alice corrected firmly. "Now get your gun, Mr. Marquetti. We have a house to defend."
