Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Alliance

The gunshot echoed in the small concrete basement, sharp and final.

Ten minutes later, Danny Falcone sat on an overturned crate in the upper hallway, his split lip being cleaned by Alice’s practiced hands. He winced slightly as she applied an antiseptic wipe, but his eyes were filled with profound, overwhelming gratitude.

"You saved my life down there, Alice," Danny said quietly, looking at her as she expertly applied a butterfly bandage to his jaw. "If you hadn't found that audio file on Nero’s collar..."

"Thank the dog, Danny," Alice said, setting her forceps down. "He’s the one who kept the recorder on his neck."

Stefano walked out of his private study down the hall, holding a glass of amber scotch in his right hand. He had removed his coat, his white chest bandages clean and tight against his ribs. He looked at Danny, throwing a set of heavy brass keys onto the table beside him.

"Carmine’s assets in Fall River are yours now, Danny," Stefano ordered smoothly. "Take six men, secure the docks, and clear out every Moretti contact in Rhode Island by midnight. I want their distribution network dismantled before sunrise."

Danny stood up, nodding grimly. "Consider it done, Boss." He looked at Alice one last time, giving her a respectful nod, before heading down the front steps where four black SUVs were already idling on the driveway.

The grand hallway fell quiet again.

Stefano walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the misty Atlantic Ocean. The morning sun was climbing higher, painting the grey waves in streaks of bright silver and gold. Nero trotted over, resting his heavy chin against Stefano’s thigh.

Alice began packing her trauma kit, snapping the locks closed.

"Where are you going?" Stefano asked without turning around.

Alice paused, looking up at his broad back. "My shift is long over, Mr. Marquetti. The traitor is gone, your lieutenant is cleared, and your chest wound is clean. You don't need a trauma nurse anymore."

Stefano turned around slowly. He set his scotch glass down on the windowsill and walked toward her with measured, deliberate steps until he was standing directly in front of her.

"I didn't hire you just because I was bleeding, Alice," Stefano said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her heart leap into her throat.

"Then why did you double my hospital contract?" she asked, raising her chin, refusing to look away from his gaze.

"Because for thirty years, every person who has walked into my life has wanted something from me," Stefano said, reaching out with his long, calloused fingers and gently lifting her chin. "My money, my territory, my protection, or my life. You walked into a room full of thirty armed men and a killer dog with empty hands, just to stop my heart from quitting."

"It’s my job," Alice whispered, though her breathing was becoming shallow as his thumb brushed over her jawline.

"It’s not a job," Stefano corrected gently. "It’s who you are."

He leaned down, his face inches from hers. The scent of cedarwood, dark tobacco, and his warm skin enveloped her completely.

"Stay," Stefano murmured against her lips. "Not as my nurse. As mine."

Alice felt the world tilt on its axis. She looked down at Nero, who was looking up at the two of them, his tail giving one slow, happy thud against the floor. She looked back into Stefano’s dark, fierce eyes—eyes that offered her a world of danger, power, and absolute, unyielding protection.

"On one condition," Alice said, a soft, sharp smile touching her lips.

"Name it," Stefano replied instantly.

"You take your antibiotics on time," she said. "And you never hide a bullet wound from me again."

Stefano let out a rich, deep laugh that echoed off the high ceilings of the mansion. He pulled her close against his broad chest, his right arm wrapping around her waist, and kissed her—a deep, possessive, burning kiss that sealed their fate under the morning sun.
