Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Marble

The shift in the room was instantaneous, a sudden, breath-stealing release of tension that left the air heavy with the metallic tang of fresh blood and burnt wood.
Danny Falcone was the first to cross the threshold, his boots clicking in rapid, disciplined succession against the cold marble. Two paramedics followed in his wake, dragging a heavy orange spine board and a trauma kit between them. Their faces were chalk-white, eyes flickering nervously toward Nero, who sat anchored three feet away like a dark, breathing monument. The mastiff’s chest expanded and contracted in deep, ragged cycles, his eyes never leaving Alice’s hands.
"Pressure on the entry wound," Alice commanded, her voice slicing through the chaos. She didn't look up at the paramedics, nor at the thirty armed men edging into the perimeter. "He’s tachypneic. Shallow respirations, thirty-two a minute. Trachea is midline, but his left breath sounds are absent. He’s got a tension hemothorax. I need a fourteen-gauge chest needle and an occlusive dressing now."
The lead paramedic, a veteran named Miller whose hands were trembling, fumbled with the latch of his orange response bag. "We... we aren't authorized to perform needle decompression without online medical control—"
"He won't survive the five-minute gurney roll to the rig if you wait for a radio patch," Alice snapped, her bare hands slick with Stefano Marquetti’s blood. She extended one crimson-stained hand back without breaking her gaze from the wound beneath her palm. "Hand me the needle, or step aside and let me pop his chest myself."
Danny leaned over the paramedic, his shadow completely enveloping the man. "Give her whatever the hell she asks for," Danny said, his tone dropping into an icy, unyielding register that offered no room for debate.
Miller ripped open the sterile packaging, pressing the thick orange-sheathed needle into Alice’s palm.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Alice located the second intercostal space in the midclavicular line on Stefano’s left chest. She aligned the steel tip against his pale skin, bracing her wrist.
"Nero, stay," she whispered softly, her voice shifting from clinical authority to a low, soothing hum.
The mastiff’s ears twitched. He shifted half an inch closer, his black snout brushing the hem of her scrub top, but he remained seated, his rumbling growl locked deep in his chest.
Alice drove the needle home.
A sharp, hissed rush of trapped air and dark, venous blood erupted from the catheter hub—fsssssssshhhh. Stefano’s entire upper body jolted off the stone floor as his left lung expanded. A ragged, agonizing gasp tore from the mafia boss’s throat, his chest rising in a sudden, violent heave.
His eyelids fluttered open.
Stefano Marquetti’s eyes were not gray or blue; they were a dark, obsidian brown, sharp and lethal even through the glaze of impending shock. For three seconds, his gaze spun wildly, searching the charred ceiling beams of his great hall. Then, his vision focused directly on Alice. His hand, heavy and scarred, reached up with agonizing slowness, his thick fingers locking around her left wrist with the crushing force of an iron vise.
"Who..." Stefano choked out, blood bubbling at the corner of his lip. "...are you?"
"I’m the person keeping you from bleeding out on your own floor," Alice said coldly, uncurling his fingers from her wrist with practiced, firm pressure and placing his hand back down at his side. "Keep still, Mr. Marquetti. Your dog is the only reason you’re still breathing. Don't ruin his hard work."
Stefano’s eyes flicked to Nero. The mastiff lowered his massive head, resting his heavy chin directly on Stefano’s chest, letting out a deep, wet sigh that sounded like a prayer.
"Log roll on three," Alice ordered the paramedics, stepping back just enough to allow the board underneath his shoulders. "One, two, three."
As they lifted the billionaire mob boss onto the gurney, Stefano’s dark eyes never left Alice’s face. Even as the paramedics threw a thermal blanket over his trembling body and wheeled him toward the grand double doors of the mansion, he kept his stare fixed on her, as if anchoring his fading consciousness to the only clean thing in the room.
Danny Falcone stepped beside Alice as she stood up. She wiped her hands with a dry sterile pad, her knees trembling slightly as the adrenaline rush began to ebb.
"The ambulance is heading to Rhode Island Hospital," Danny said, pulling an encrypted phone from his suit pocket. "Our private wing is prepped. You’re coming with us."
Alice turned to him, her posture stiffening. "My shift ended at midnight, Mr. Falcone. I answered a mutual aid call because your estate’s private security dispatch reported a mass casualty event. My job is done."
"Your job isn't done," a harsh voice spoke up from the hallway.
Carmine Baldi stepped out from behind the security team, his arms crossed over a dark wool coat, his face cold and angular. He looked at Nero, who was standing beside Alice, his massive shoulder pressed firmly against her hip.
"The dog won't let us put him in the truck," Carmine said, pointing a finger at the open doorway where the paramedics were stalled at the back of the rig.
Nero was standing at the threshold of the mansion, blocking the rear doors of the ambulance, his upper lip curled back to reveal yellow, bone-crushing teeth. He wasn't letting the paramedics shut the doors. He was waiting for her.
"He doesn't trust us," Danny said quietly, looking at Alice with a mixture of necessity and grave realization. "And right now, Miss Brennan, my boss is only alive because that animal trusts you. If you walk away, the dog tears those EMTs apart, or someone puts a bullet in the dog to clear the truck, and Stefano dies of internal hemorrhaging on the highway. You get in the rig, or nobody moves."
May you like
Alice looked down at her bare, blood-stained hands, then out at the black mastiff standing in the doorway, his eyes fixed on her with absolute, unwavering loyalty.
"I need a clean pair of scrubs," Alice said quietly. "And nobody touches that dog."
