Chapter 10 - The Garden of St. Jude

One year later.

The summer sun shone bright and warm over the rolling green hills of the new Marquetti estate in Newport—a sprawling, historic stone villa rebuilt completely from the ground up, surrounded by blooming white rose gardens, ancient oak trees, and high, impenetrable security walls that blended seamlessly into the coastal landscape.

Today, the estate was filled with light, music, and the joyful sounds of a massive celebration.

Over two hundred guests—business partners, community leaders, legal associates, and trusted security personnel—sat along the marble outdoor patio overlooking the sparkling blue waters of Rhode Island Sound.

Danny Falcone stood near the altar, dressed in an immaculate black tuxedo, holding a pair of velvet boxes in his hand, a proud, handsome smile on his face.

The soft, romantic notes of a harp filled the ocean air.

The double French doors of the main villa swung open.

Alice Brennan walked out onto the stone path. She wore a breathtaking silk wedding gown that flowed around her like liquid ivory, her long hair styled in loose, soft curls adorned with tiny white orchids. In her hands, she held a simple bouquet of dark red roses.

Beside her, acting as her official ring bearer and escort, walked Nero.

The Neapolitan mastiff was immaculately groomed, wearing a custom black silk collar adorned with a single white rose. He walked with heavy, dignified grace at Alice’s left hip, his broad head held high, his dark eyes sweeping the crowd with proud, protective joy.

At the end of the aisle stood Stefano Marquetti.

He looked impossibly handsome in a bespoke dark charcoal tuxedo, his dark hair combed back, his dark eyes fixed on Alice with a deep, reverent, and overwhelming love that brought tears to the eyes of half the women in the gallery. The scar on his left cheek and the unseen scar on his chest were small prices paid for the kingdom he had built at her side.

As Alice reached the altar, Nero stopped, bowing his heavy head gently against Stefano’s leg before taking his place on a velvet rug beside the altar.

Stefano took Alice’s hands into his own. His long, calloused fingers trembled slightly—a man who had faced down armies without flinching, brought to his knees by the beauty of the woman standing before him.

"You look like an angel, Alice," Stefano whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

"And you look like a man who took his antibiotics on time," Alice whispered back, a soft, radiant laugh escaping her lips.

The elderly priest smiled, raising his hands over the couple.

"We are gathered here today," the priest began, his voice echoing over the peaceful garden, "to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony. A bond forged not in quiet waters, but in the fires of devotion, courage, and unbroken loyalty."

The ceremony proceeded with quiet, profound elegance. When the time came for the vows, Stefano looked deep into Alice’s green eyes, holding her hands tightly against his chest.

"Alice," Stefano said, his deep baritone voice carrying clearly across the garden. "A year ago, I was a dead man lying on a cold stone floor, surrounded by smoke and blood. I built an empire of iron and shadow, but I had nothing worth living for. Then you walked into my house with empty hands and saved my life. You brought light into my darkness, peace into my war, and love into my cold heart. I swear to you, before God and these witnesses, that my life, my empire, and my soul belong to you forever."

Tears glistened in Alice’s eyes as she smiled up at him.

"Stefano," Alice said softly, her voice steady and true. "I used to think my purpose in life was simply to fix broken bodies in emergency rooms. But when I met you, I learned that true healing isn't just about closing wounds—it’s about finding the person who makes your heart beat with purpose. You gave me a home, a family, and a love that fears nothing. I promise to stand by your side, through every storm, every battle, and every sunrise, for the rest of my days."

"By the power vested in me," the priest declared with a wide smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Stefano didn't wait a second longer.

He pulled Alice into his arms, dipping her slightly, and kissed her—a long, deep, burning kiss that filled the garden with thunderous applause and cheers from two hundred guests. Nero let out a loud, triumphant bark that made everyone laugh, his tail thudding wildly against the stone floor.

As they straightened up, hand in hand, looking out over their friends, their family, and the vast, golden ocean before them, Stefano pulled Alice close against his side.

"Ready for your new life, Mrs. Marquetti?" Stefano whispered against her ear.

Alice looked at her husband, then down at the faithful mastiff trotting beside them, and smiled—a bright, fearless smile that lit up the afternoon sky.

"I’ve been ready since the moment I took off my gloves," Alice replied softly.

And together, under the warm, golden sun of a new dawn, they walked into their forever.
