Chapter 5 - The Voice in the Dark

Alice took the tiny silver card, her fingers cool against the plastic. She walked quickly across the plush carpet to the massive mahogany desk near the window, opening the sleek black laptop resting beside a row of encrypted monitors.
She inserted the card into the side slot. A red security prompt flashed on the screen: ENCRYPTION KEY REQUIRED.
"Type N-E-R-O-0-9-1-2," Stefano instructed from the bed, sitting up straight despite the obvious pain radiating through his left chest.
Alice typed the code. The red screen vanished, replaced by a digital audio waveform spanning forty-eight hours of continuous ambient recording.
"Go to timestamp 01:12 AM," Stefano said. "Thirty minutes before the fire."
Alice dragged the digital slider back to 01:12:00. She clicked play.
The high-definition audio was crystal clear. The background hum of the mansion’s central air conditioning played first, followed by the soft sound of Nero’s heavy paws pacing across the marble floor of the west hallway.
Then, a door opened.
A voice spoke—low, muffled, but entirely unmistakable.
"The charges are set at the patio doors," Carmine’s voice echoed through the laptop speakers. "When the west wing goes up, the guards will move to the lawn. That’s when you go into the great hall and put two rounds into his chest. Make sure the dog is put down first; he’s too big to control."
A second, unknown voice answered with a heavy Boston accent: "What about Falcone? He’s on his way back from Providence."
"Danny is being taken care of," Carmine’s voice replied, accompanied by the distinct sound of a gun slide being racking back. "I’ve already planted the offshore account transfers on his laptop. By tomorrow morning, Danny Falcone will be the dead traitor who sold out the Marquetti family to the Moretti syndicate."
Alice gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.
Nero let out a sharp, bone-chilling bark from the foot of the bed, his head snapping toward the laptop as if recognizing the voice that had threatened his life.
In the bed, Stefano didn't move a single muscle. His face didn't twist in rage; it became smooth, cold, and entirely expressionless—the terrifying composure of a king who had just watched his trusted general sign his own death warrant.
"Pull the audio file onto an encrypted drive," Stefano ordered softly. "And bring me my coat."
"Stefano, you can't go down there," Alice said, rushing back to his bedside, her medical instincts overriding her shock. "You had a resected lung four days ago! If your blood pressure spikes during a confrontation, you could burst the pulmonary arterial graft!"
Stefano stood up slowly from the edge of the mattress. He winced slightly as his feet hit the floor, but he straightened his broad shoulders, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a force that made the air freeze in her throat.
"Carmine has Danny in a cell downstairs," Stefano said quietly, taking his black wool coat from the armchair and sliding his right arm through the sleeve, leaving his injured left side draped over his shoulder. "If I don't walk down those stairs right now, Danny Falcone dies for a crime he didn't commit."
He stepped closer to Alice, reaching out with his right hand and gently cupping the back of her head, his broad thumb resting against her cheekbone.
"You saved my life in that hall, Alice," Stefano whispered, his dark eyes burning with an intense, fierce protection. "Now stay behind me, and watch how I protect the people who are loyal to me."
He turned toward the door. "Nero. Heel."
The mastiff stepped into position at Stefano’s right hip, his body rigid, his eyes dark with purpose.
Alice looked at the encrypted drive in her hand, then at the blood-stained bandages beneath Stefano’s coat. She pulled off her sterile gloves, threw them into the tray, and took a deep breath.

"I’m coming with you," Alice said firmly. "Someone needs to make sure you don't bleed to death while you execute your traitor."
Stefano looked back over his shoulder, a small, dark smile touching his lips. "Then keep close, Nurse Brennan. Things are about to get loud."
