Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Davis

The social fallout from the live stream was instantaneous and catastrophic for Mary Davis.

Mary had built her entire social standing in her country club community on the myth of her "perfect, traditional family." She was the president of the local garden club, a board member of the suburban charity foundation, and a woman who routinely looked down her nose at anyone who failed to meet her impossible standards of propriety.

By Monday morning, that myth was completely dust.

The full iPad video had been downloaded by several cousins during the live stream and circulated through the suburban social circles like wildfire. By noon, Mary’s country club membership had been suspended pending an ethics review. The charity foundation released a formal statement announcing that Mary Davis had "stepped down" from her board position to address "private family matters."

At 10:00 AM, I sat in the executive office of my uncle, Richard Miller, the CEO of Miller Global Logistics.

Uncle Richard was a towering, gray-haired man with sharp blue eyes and a zero-tolerance policy for disrespect. He sat behind his mahogany desk, reviewing the financial audit he had ordered first thing Monday morning on Mark’s department.

"The spineless little bastard," Uncle Richard growled, slamming the file shut. "Not only did he lie to you about his debts, Amanda, but he’s been abusing his corporate expense account for the last six months to cover his personal dinners and hotel stays with his mother and sister."

"How much did he misappropriate?" I asked calmly.

"Nearly $18,000," Uncle Richard replied, his face dark with fury. "It’s corporate embezzlement. I’ve already terminated his employment effective immediately. Our legal council is handing the file over to the District Attorney’s office. If he doesn't repay every single cent by the end of the week, he’s going to state prison."

"What about his severance package?"

"There is no severance package for gross misconduct and felony embezzlement," Uncle Richard snapped. "He walked out of this building ten minutes ago with his personal belongings in a cardboard box, crying like a baby."

I nodded slowly. "And his mother?"

"Mary called my office four times this morning begging me to go easy on him," Uncle Richard chuckled darkly. "She actually had the nerve to claim that you 'provoked' Mark into making financial mistakes. I told her that if she stepped foot on company property, I’d have corporate security arrest her for trespassing."

As I left my uncle's office building, I stepped out into the crisp afternoon air, feeling a profound sense of liberation. The web of lies, manipulation, and arrogance that the Davis family had spun around me for months was unravelling completely.

My phone chimed. It was a text from Victoria:

Victoria: The court has officially granted the emergency asset freeze on Mark Davis's accounts to secure your $15,000 reimbursement. Also, Susan’s defense lawyer just called me crying for a settlement. They realize they have zero chance in court.

I smiled, typing a quick reply:

Amanda: No settlements. We go to court. I want every single one of them to answer for what they did under oath.
