Chapter 9 - The Fortress of Peace

Six months later.
Autumn had settled over the estate, covering the grounds in a rich blanket of gold and crimson leaves. The mansion had undergone complete interior renovations—the cold, sterile security look was gone, replaced by warm hardwood floors, plush leather furniture, family portrait galleries, and sunlit playrooms.
In the backyard, a massive custom wooden playground had been built near the oak trees, featuring swings, slide towers, and a sprawling playhouse.
Veronica sat on the veranda porch, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater and jeans, sipping a warm cup of tea. Her lap was covered with a soft wool blanket.
From the playground, the sound of loud giggles echoed across the lawn.
Rory—the once-feared King of the city’s underground—was currently sitting inside a tiny pink plastic playhouse, wearing a comically small golden crown on his head.
Lily was serving him imaginary tea from a plastic teapot, while Rose was busy painting his large, tattooed fingernails with washable purple glitter polish.
“More tea, King Dad?” Lily asked politely, pouring air into his tiny cup.
“Thank you, Princess Lily,” Rory said gravely, taking a tiny sip from the plastic cup with his pinky finger sticking out. “This is the finest tea in the realm. But tell me... does the purple polish match my tactical jacket?”
Rose giggled hysterically, painting his thumb with expert precision. “It matches your eyes, Dad!”
Veronica watched the scene from the veranda, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep it felt like a physical weight. She rested her hand gently on her stomach, feeling a tiny, subtle flutter beneath her palm.
Rory caught her movement from across the lawn. His sharp eyes immediately focused on her hand resting over her belly.
He gently stood up, bowing to his little princesses. “Excuse me, ladies. The King must check on the Queen.”
He walked across the soft grass, stepping onto the veranda. He looked towering, rugged, and impossibly handsome in his dark sweater, even with purple glitter sparkling on his fingers.
He sat beside her on the bench, wrapping a large, warm arm around her shoulders and pulling her close to his side.
“How are you feeling today?” he asked softly, kissing her temple. “Any morning sickness?”
“It’s afternoon, Rory,” she chuckled, resting her head on his broad chest. “And no, I feel wonderful.”
Rory laid his large, warm hand directly over hers, resting on her belly. His eyes filled with an intense, emotional warmth as he felt the subtle energy of new life growing inside her.
Two weeks ago, they had discovered Veronica was pregnant with their first child together—a little boy, due in the spring.
“When Marco saw the nursery blueprints for a boy, he nearly cried,” Rory smiled softly, his thumb rubbing small circles on her hand. “He’s already ordering miniature tactical boots.”
Veronica laughed warmly. “The child isn't going to be a soldier, Rory. He’s going to be a happy kid in a safe house.”
“He will be,” Rory agreed, his voice dropping into a serious, heartfelt tone. “I’ve officially finalized the sale of the last shipping yard to the city port authority today. The Starks Syndicate is 100% legitimate now, Veronica. Clean contracts, legal security firms, and community trusts.”
He looked into her dark, beautiful eyes.
“No more darkness. No more ghosts. Just us.”
Veronica turned her head, pressing a soft kiss to his lips, tasting the warm coffee and sweetness of his mouth.

“You gave me everything I ever dreamed of, Rory,” she whispered against his skin. “A real family. Absolute safety. And a love that healed every scar.”
Rory wrapped both arms around her, pulling her completely onto his lap, holding his wife tight against his heart as the autumn sun set over their peaceful empire.
