Chapter 8 - The Dawn of a New Era

Two months after the fall of the Moretti Family, the city had completely transformed.

The Commission, stripped of its old corruption, had signed a historic peace treaty drafted by Rory Starks. The Starks Syndicate was officially transitioning out of illegal arms and turf extortion, converting its vast wealth into legitimate international shipping, real estate, and private security infrastructure.

The city’s underground war was officially over.

On a warm Saturday morning, the Starks estate was buzzing with a different kind of energy. White floral arches lined the sprawling green lawns, classical string quartets played soft melodies near the marble fountains, and hundreds of high-society guests filled the white velvet chairs arranged on the lawn.

It was not a mob summit.

It was a wedding.

Inside the master suite, Veronica stood in front of a mirror, dressed in a breathtaking white lace wedding gown with a sweeping silk train. Her hair was swept up into an elegant bun adorned with tiny pearl pins, and around her neck hung the restored Starks heirloom diamond necklace.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Lily and Rose peeked inside, wearing matching dusty-pink flower girl dresses with silver crowns in their hair. Each girl held a small basket filled with white rose petals.

“Veronica! You look like a real princess!” Rose squeaked, rushing over to carefully hold the edge of her gown.

“No,” Lily corrected her sister gently, smiling up at Veronica with pure adoration. “She looks like Mom.”

Veronica gasped softly, tears welling up in her dark eyes. She dropped to her knees, being careful with her dress, and pulled both little girls into a warm, fragrant hug.

“I love you both so much,” Veronica whispered, kissing their cheeks. “Thank you for letting me be your mom.”

“Dad’s waiting downstairs,” Lily giggled, touching Veronica’s veil. “He’s wearing a fancy suit, but he keeps checking his watch every five seconds because he’s nervous!”

Veronica laughed softly, wiping a happy tear from her eye. “Then we better not keep him waiting.”

Down on the lawn, standing beneath a massive archway of white roses and eucalyptus, stood Rory Starks.

He looked extraordinarily handsome in a midnight-blue three-piece tuxedo. Marco stood beside him as his best man, sporting a rare, genuine smile.

When the string quartet shifted into the grand entrance processional, the entire crowd stood up.

First came Lily and Rose, tossing rose petals onto the white carpet with bright, radiant smiles.

Then, the doors of the terrace opened.

Veronica stepped onto the aisle, walking alone—a woman who needed no man to give her away, because she had forged her own destiny through fire and courage.

Rory’s breath hitched in his throat. The terrifying mob boss who had faced down armies felt his knees go weak at the sight of her. His eyes glowed with an intense, fierce devotion that brought a tear to every guest in attendance.

When she reached the altar, Rory took her hands in his. His large, warm fingers wrapped around hers, grounding them both in the moment.

“You are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” Rory whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

“And you’re late on your promise,” she teased softly, her eyes sparkling. “You said you’d claim me before the whole city.”

“I’m keeping that promise today,” he replied warmly.

The priest read the traditional vows, but when it came time for their personal promises, Rory spoke from his heart without looking at his notes.

“Veronica,” Rory said, his voice echoing clearly across the sunlit lawn. “Five years ago, I thought my heart died in the dark. I built walls around my home and my soul, trying to protect my daughters from a cruel world. Then you walked into my house. You saw the pain no one else cared to look for. You healed my daughters, you stood by me in the storm, and you brought light back into a dark castle.”

He slipped a flawless, oval-cut diamond band onto her finger.

“I give you my name, my empire, my protection, and my eternal love. Where you go, I go.”

Veronica wiped a tear from her cheek, smiling radiantly as she slid a matching gold band onto his finger.

“Rory,” she said softly, her voice filled with absolute conviction. “I spent five years running from a past I didn't choose. I thought hiding was the only way to survive. But you showed me that home isn't a place—it’s the arms of the man who fights for you. I promise to stand by your side, love your daughters as my own, and build a future where we never have to look over our shoulders again.”

“By the power vested in me,” the priest announced with a wide smile, “I now pronounce you Husband and Wife. You may kiss the bride.”

Rory didn't wait a second longer. He pulled Veronica into his arms, dipping her slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate, life-affirming kiss.

The crowd erupted into wild applause, cheers, and whistles. Lily and Rose threw their entire baskets of rose petals into the air, dancing around their parents in pure joy.
