Chapter 6 - The Heat of the Aftermath

The bulletproof limousine glided smoothly through the rain-slicked streets of the city, isolated from the world behind dark tint and quiet luxury.

Inside the rear cabin, the atmosphere was thick with residual adrenaline, unexpressed desire, and the intoxicating victory of the evening.

Veronica sat on the leather bench, her emerald dress spreading around her like liquid silk. She had unclasped the heavy diamond choker, setting it on the marble console between them. Her breath was slightly uneven as she looked across at Rory.

Rory had removed his tuxedo jacket and unbuttoned the top three buttons of his crisp white shirt, exposing the heavy black ink of the raven tattoo on his chest. He was staring at her with an intensity that made her skin burn.

“You were brilliant tonight,” Rory murmured, his voice low and raspy in the quiet cabin.

“I had a very convincing partner,” Veronica replied softly, a slight smile touching her lips. “Though... ‘my woman’? Was that part of the script, Mr. Starks?”

Rory slid across the leather bench, closing the distance between them until his large frame completely dominated her field of vision. He reached out, his long fingers gently cupping the back of her neck, his thumb tracing the soft line of her jawline.

“I don't play scripts, Veronica,” Rory said, his eyes dropping to her lips before rising back to meet her gaze. “Everything I said in that ballroom was the absolute truth.”

Veronica’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. “Rory... I came into your house as a maid. I’m the daughter of your worst enemy.”

“I don't care who your father was,” Rory growled softly, leaning in until his lips were bare millimeters from hers. “I care about the woman who saved my daughters. I care about the woman who stood beside me tonight and didn't flinch when the world was watching.”

He pulled her closer, his hand wrapping firmly around her slender waist.

“Tell me to stop, Veronica,” he rasped against her skin. “Tell me you want me to be just your employer... and I’ll step back.”

Veronica looked into his dark, storm-filled eyes, seeing all the pain, the strength, and the fierce devotion that made him the man he was. She didn't step back. She reached up, her fingers threading into his thick dark hair, pulling him down to her.

“Don't you dare step back,” she whispered.

Their lips met in a fierce, fiery kiss that shattered every remaining wall between them.

The restraint Rory had maintained for months crumbled instantly. He pulled her onto his lap, his large, calloused hands gripping her waist as he deepened the kiss, tasting the sweetness of her mouth mixed with the faint taste of expensive champagne. Veronica gasped into his mouth, her arms wrapping tightly around his broad shoulders, surrendering completely to the heat consuming them both.

His hands traced the curve of her spine, pressing her flush against his solid chest. Every touch was possessive, intense, yet remarkably tender. He kissed her cheeks, her jawline, and down the exposed column of her throat, making her let out a soft, breathy sigh.

“Rory...” she murmured, her hands clutching his shirt.

“You’re mine, Veronica,” he whispered against her pulse point, his voice vibrating through her entire body. “I’m never letting you hide in the shadows of my house again.”

The limousine smoothly pulled up the long, winding driveway of the Starks estate, coming to a halt beneath the grand portico.

Rory reluctantly broke the kiss, resting his forehead against hers as both of them caught their breath. His eyes were dark with a deep, consuming passion, but a soft, genuine smile lit up his rugged face—a smile no one in the syndicate had seen in years.

He stepped out of the car first, then reached back inside, picking Veronica up in his arms effortlessly as if she weighed nothing at all.

Veronica laughed softly, wrapping her arms around his neck as he carried her up the marble steps of the mansion. The armed guards at the front entrance immediately snapped to attention, bowing their heads respectfully as their Don carried his new Queen inside.

He didn't take her to the maid’s quarters on the ground floor.

He carried her straight up the grand staircase, past the nursery where his daughters slept peacefully, and into the master suite on the top floor—a room that had remained locked and dark for two long years.

He set her down gently beside the grand four-poster bed. The room was illuminated only by the soft moonlight streaming through the terrace windows.

Rory framed her face with his hands, looking down at her with a reverence that made Veronica’s eyes shine with tears.

“Welcome home, Veronica,” he whispered softly.

And in the quiet luxury of that moonlight room, surrounded by the safety she had fought five years to find, Veronica finally surrendered her heart to the Mafia Boss who had claimed her before the world.
