Chapter 4 - The Shadow over the Manor

The next morning, the Starks estate was transformed into an armed fortress.

Extra guards in dark suits patrolled the manicured lawns, Belgian Malinois security dogs trotted along the iron perimeters, and bulletproof shutters were installed over the nursery windows. Yet inside the house, a strange, beautiful calm had settled over the second floor.

For the first night in sixty days, six-year-old Lily and Rose slept soundly through the night. They didn't wake at three in the morning. They didn't scream. They didn't clutch their heads in agony.

When the morning sun streamed through the nursery sheer curtains, Veronica walked in carrying a tray of warm milk and honey pancakes. She was no longer wearing the grey maid’s uniform; Rory had personally ordered the staff to treat her as an honored guest, though she still insisted on taking care of the girls herself.

“Veronica!” Rose squeaked, sitting up in bed with a messy nest of brown hair. She scrambled out from under her duvet and threw her tiny arms around Veronica’s waist.

Lily followed right behind her sister, wrapping her arms around Veronica’s legs. “The buzzing monster is gone, Veronica! Dad said you chased it away with magic scissors!”

Veronica smiled warmly, setting the tray on the bedside table and kneeling to wrap her arms around both girls. “It wasn't magic, sweeties. Just a little bit of spring cleaning. How do your heads feel today?”

“No ringing!” Lily giggled, touching her ears happily. “It’s super quiet!”

Standing at the threshold of the open doorway, Rory watched the scene in silence. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the intricate black tattoos lining his forearms. A cup of dark coffee was balanced in his hand.

For months, he had watched his daughters wither away, helpless against an invisible enemy that doctors couldn't diagnose. Seeing them smile and laugh again hit him with a wave of emotion so intense it nearly brought the ruthless mob boss to his knees.

He cleared his throat softly. The girls immediately looked up.

“Dad!” Rose bounced on the bed. “Veronica brought pancakes!”

Rory stepped into the room, leaning down to kiss the top of each daughter’s head. “I see that. But Veronica has important work to do today, girls. She can’t stay in the nursery all morning.”

Lily pouted, grabbing Veronica’s hand tightly. “Can’t she stay forever? She makes the bad dreams go away.”

Veronica looked up at Rory, a delicate blush creeping into her cheeks at Lily’s innocent words. Rory met her gaze, his dark eyes holding an intense, unspoken emotion that made Veronica’s heart skip a beat.

“We’ll see about forever, Lily,” Rory said softly, his eyes never leaving Veronica’s face. “Run along to the dining room with Marco. Your tutors are arriving early today.”

Once the girls had run down the hallway giggling, the room fell into an intimate silence.

Rory stepped closer to Veronica, setting his coffee cup down. “My men tracked the signal from Victoria’s relay mirror. It was bouncing to an encrypted receiver located at the Moretti shipping docks down by the harbor.”

Veronica straightened her clothes. “Antonio knows Victoria failed?”

“Not yet,” Rory said grimly. “We’ve been feeding dummy signals back through the relay to make them think the operation is still running smoothly. But Antonio is an old fox. He’ll realize something is wrong by tonight when Victoria doesn't check in.”

“What’s your plan?”

“I’m going to end the Moretti Syndicate,” Rory said flatly. “No more turf wars. No more proxy games. I’m taking his docks, his warehouses, and his life.”

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, modern smartphone, handing it to her.

“What’s this?” she asked.

“A direct, satellite-encrypted line to me and Marco,” Rory explained. “From this second on, you don't step outside this house without two armed escorts. Antonio’s men don't know you’re here yet, but if they find out his missing daughter is living under my roof and helping me dismantle his empire, they will target you with everything they have.”

Veronica held the phone, looking down at the screen. “I’m not afraid of Antonio, Rory.”

“I know you’re not,” Rory murmured, leaning in close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. His fingers gently traced the side of her arm, sending a shiver through her spine. “That’s what terrifies me. You don't fear death, Veronica. But now... I have too many things in this house that I can’t afford to lose.”

His voice was raw, honest, and stripped of his usual mob-boss bravado. For the first time, Veronica saw the man behind the terrifying reputation—a man who had lost his wife, almost lost his daughters, and was now standing on the precipice of losing his heart again.

“I’m not going anywhere, Rory,” she whispered, holding his intense gaze. “We finish this together.”

Rory stared at her lips for a agonizing second, his hand resting gently against her waist. The temptation to pull her flush against his chest was overwhelming. But before he could make a move, his phone buzzed sharply in his pocket.

He pulled it out, answering in a cold tone. “Speak.”

Marco’s voice came through the speaker, urgent and tense. “Boss, we have a problem at the harbor. Antonio Moretti just called an emergency meeting of the Five Families at the Grand Obsidian Hotel tonight. He’s claiming you kidnapped his daughter five years ago—and that you’re using her to wage an illegal war against his family.”

Rory’s eyes darkened into black ice. “He’s spinning the narrative before the Commission.”

“That’s not all,” Marco added. “He announced that at the gala tonight, he’s going to introduce his new successor—and reveal evidence that the Starks Syndicate is unstable.”

Rory hung up the phone and looked at Veronica, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face.

“It seems your father wants to play politics before the entire city,” Rory said softly. “He wants to introduce his successor at the Grand Obsidian Gala.”

Veronica’s eyes narrowed into sharp diamond blades. “Then let’s give the Five Families a night they will never forget.”
