Chapter 9 - The Heirs of Hope

Six months later.
The crisp autumn air of Chicago was filled with the rustle of golden leaves outside the newly opened Marlene & Sofia Pediatric Research Center in downtown Chicago—a fifty-million-dollar state-of-the-art facility built entirely by the Castellano Foundation to provide free bone marrow matches and medical care for impoverished children.
A grand ribbon-cutting ceremony was underway.
Marlene stood before a crowd of news reporters, doctors, and families, cutting the thick red ribbon with giant silver scissors while Roland stood beside her, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist.
"Six years ago," Marlene addressed the microphones, her voice clear and resonant, "I was a mother lying in a hospital bed, told that my baby was gone because I was too poor to fight back. Today, this hospital stands as a promise: no mother will ever be lied to again. No child will be left to suffer because their parents cannot afford care."
The crowd cheered wildly.
After the ceremony, Roland and Marlene took the children for a private walk through the estate’s private botanical gardens.
Mateo was running ahead, flying a red kite in the autumn breeze, while little Sofia was holding her mother’s hand, pointing at the blooming orange dahlias.
Roland pulled Marlene toward a stone bench near the marble fountain, wrapping a warm cashmere coat over her shoulders.
"You look radiant today, my love," Roland whispered, kissing her cheek.
Marlene smiled, resting her head against his shoulder. "I am happy, Roland. Truly, deeply happy. For the first time in my life, I don't wake up afraid of tomorrow."
"Neither do I," Roland admitted gently. "You changed everything, Marlene. The business is completely clean. The police investigations are closed. The children are thriving. We have a peaceful life."
Marlene turned to look at him, her hazel eyes sparkling with a secret smile. She took his hand and placed it gently over her flat stomach.
Roland froze. He looked down at her hand, then up at her face, his dark eyes widening in sudden, breathless awe.
"Marlene...?" he breathed, his voice barely a whisper.
"Dr. Aris ran the blood tests yesterday morning," Marlene smiled softly, tears of happiness shining in her eyes. "We're having another baby, Roland."
Roland let out a loud, joy-filled laugh—a sound so bright and unburdened it echoed across the entire garden. He wrapped his massive arms around her, lifting her off her feet and spinning her around on the stone patio.
"Another baby!" Roland cheered, kissing her forehead, her cheeks, and her lips with unrestrained love. "A miracle!"
Mateo and Sofia came running over, laughing and throwing fallen golden leaves into the air. "Daddy! Why are you spinning Mommy?!"

Roland set Marlene down gently, dropping down onto his knees to pull both of his children into a big hug.
"Because, my sweet angels," Roland smiled warmly, looking up at his beautiful wife, "Mommy just gave us another gift to love."
