Chapter 6 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

Three weeks passed.

The recovery of Mateo and Sofia was hailed as a medical miracle. Within twenty days, both children were declared completely out of danger, their energy returning with the wild, loud enthusiasm typical of four-year-olds.

Marlene’s life had changed completely. She no longer wore the faded servant uniform or slept in the small, drafty staff quarters on the first floor. Roland had moved her into a luxurious suite directly adjacent to the nursery on the second floor.

She had her own wardrobe, private doctors, and a dedicated security detail led by Frank himself.

Yet, despite the luxury, Marlene remained grounded. She spent every waking hour playing with Mateo and Sofia, teaching them to draw, reading them bedtime stories, and nursing them back to full health.

One evening, while the children were fast asleep, Marlene walked down to the estate’s grand library to return a book.

As she entered, she heard heated voices coming from behind the heavy mahogany doors of Roland’s private conference room.

"Roland, you've gone soft!" a harsh, rough voice shouted. "The Moretti family is moving in on our docks in South Chicago! They heard Pike is dead and you’re spending all your time playing house with a former maid!"

Marlene paused, stepping into the shadows of the library.

Roland’s voice answered, calm, icy, and terrifyingly sharp. "Dominic, if the Moretti family wants a war over Dock 42, I will give them one. But do not speak about Marlene in that tone again."

"She’s an outsider, Roland!" another mob captain argued. "She’s a nobody! The other syndicate families are calling you weak! They say you let a servant woman run your estate!"

BANG!

The sound of a heavy fist slamming onto the mahogany table echoed through the room.

"Marlene Walsh saved the life of my heirs!" Roland’s roar cut through the air like a thunderclap. "She showed more courage, strength, and loyalty in a single hour than any of you spineless bastards have shown in ten years! If any man in this city—Moretti or otherwise—thinks I am weak, tell them to meet me at Dock 42 tomorrow night. I will show them how the Castellano family deals with threats."

Marlene felt a cold shiver run down her spine. She stepped back, her heart pounding.

She had forgotten who Roland was. Beneath the tender father who brought her soup and held her hand, he was still the ruler of an empire built on blood and fire.

As the heavy conference doors swung open, the mob captains filed out, looking angry and frustrated.

Roland stepped out last, rubbing his temples with an exhausted sigh. When he looked up and saw Marlene standing near the window, his harsh expression melted instantly into gentleness.

"Marlene," he said softly, walking over to her. "How long have you been standing there?"

May you like

"Long enough to hear about Dock 42," Marlene said quietly, looking into his tired eyes. "Roland... you don't have to fight a war for me."

Roland stopped in front of her, reaching out to gently tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. "I'm not fighting for your pride, Marlene. I'm fighting to protect the safe world we are building for our children. If the syndicate thinks you are a vulnerability, I will prove to them that you are my absolute strength."
