Chapter 7 - The Trap at Dock 42

The fog off Lake Michigan was thick and suffocating as a convoy of black SUVs pulled up to the abandoned warehouses at Dock 42.
Roland Castellano stepped out into the night, wearing a heavy black trench coat. Frank and ten armed enforcers stepped out behind him, their weapons concealed beneath their jackets.
Across the asphalt stood Don Vance Moretti—a ruthless rival mob boss who had controlled the northern territory of Chicago for decades. Moretti was surrounded by twenty heavily armed men.
"Castellano!" Moretti laughed, his voice raspy from decades of cigars. "You actually came! I thought you were too busy playing daddy to your miracle twins."
Roland walked forward until he stood ten feet away from Moretti, his hands casually tucked into his coat pockets. "You wanted a meeting, Vance. Speak."
"Word on the street is your lieutenant Pike tried to sell your daughter six years ago," Moretti sneered, taking a step closer. "Word is you gave half your estate power to some penniless maid who used to sweep floors. You're losing your grip, Roland. The Castellano empire is crumbling, and my family is taking Dock 42."
Roland didn't flinch. "Pike was a traitor, and he was executed. As for Marlene Walsh... she is the mother of my children and the future duchess of this family. Anyone who disrespects her dies."
Moretti spat on the ground. "Future duchess? A servant woman? You've gone mad, Castellano! Boys, take him out!"
Moretti’s men raised their submachine guns, but before a single trigger could be pulled, bright floodlights suddenly roared to life from the tops of the shipping containers, illuminating the entire dock like midday.
Sirens echoed from the foggy perimeter.
Dozens of black unmarked vans tore onto the docks, blocking every exit. Dozens of heavily armed federal SWAT agents and state police poured out, weapons aimed directly at Moretti’s gang.
"FBI! Nobody move! Drop your weapons!" a loudspeaker boomed.
Moretti gasped, his eyes wide with absolute betrayal. "Castellano! You called the feds?!"
Roland smiled—a cold, ruthless smirk.
"I didn't call the feds, Moretti," Roland said calmly as three federal agents stepped up beside him, nodding respectfully to Roland. "Marlene did."
From inside the front passenger seat of Roland’s armored SUV, Marlene stepped out onto the damp asphalt, holding a thick ledger of financial documents.
"Three weeks ago, while cleaning the files in Pike's old office," Marlene said, her voice amplified by the quiet dock atmosphere, "I found the financial papers linking Moretti’s family to human trafficking, dock extortion, and the corruption at Saint Mary’s Hospital. I handed those files over to the State Attorney yesterday morning."
Moretti stared at Marlene in sheer, paralyzed horror. "You... you little cleaning bitch!"
"That's Mrs. Castellano to you," Roland growled, stepping between Moretti and Marlene.
Within five minutes, Moretti and his entire crew were disarmed, handcuffed, and shoved into federal vans. The rival syndicate that had threatened Chicago for thirty years had been completely dismantled in a single night—not with bloodshed, but with the sharp intelligence of a woman they had dismissed as a servant.
Roland walked over to Marlene, wrapping his arms around her waist, shielding her from the cold lake wind.

"You brought down the Moretti syndicate without firing a bullet," Roland murmured into her ear, marveling at her brilliance.
"I told you, Roland," Marlene smiled, looking up at him as the police lights flashed around them. "Never underestimate a mother protecting her home."
