Chapter 8 - The Declaration

The news of Don Moretti’s arrest and the collapse of his syndicate shook Chicago to its core.

For days, newspapers and television broadcasts carried headlines detailing the dramatic downfall of the Moretti crime family and the sudden, total restructuring of the Castellano corporate empire.

Roland Castellano had officially announced his retirement from all illegal syndicate operations, transitioning the vast Castellano fortune into legitimate shipping, real estate, and medical research foundations.

And at the center of this transformation stood Marlene Walsh.

On a bright Saturday afternoon, the grand ballroom of the Castellano estate was transformed into a dazzling reception hall. Over three hundred guests—city officials, high-ranking judges, business leaders, and former syndicate captains—were gathered beneath the crystal chandeliers.

Marlene stood at the top of the grand staircase, where she had dropped the silver tray weeks ago.

She was dressed in a breathtaking, ice-blue silk gown that matched her eyes. Her hair was styled in an elegant updo, adorned with tiny white diamonds. She looked every inch a queen.

Beside her stood Mateo and Sofia, dressed in matching formal wear, laughing and holding their mother’s hands.

Roland stood at the head of the ballroom, holding a crystal glass, tapping it gently with a silver spoon to call the room to order.

The room went completely silent.

"Four weeks ago," Roland spoke, his deep voice echoing through the vast hall, "this house was a place of grief, darkness, and impending death. I was a man who believed money and power could solve anything, while my children were dying in my arms."

Roland turned, looking up at the top of the stairs, his eyes locking onto Marlene.

"Then a woman walked through those front doors," Roland continued, his voice filled with raw emotion. "She came here carrying blood on her hands, pain in her heart, and the dust of poverty on her shoes. People in this house judged her. They called her a thief. They tried to humiliate her."

Several former staff members and guests lowered their heads in deep shame.

"But Marlene Walsh did not break," Roland declared proudly. "She proved to be the bravest, purest, and most brilliant soul I have ever known. She saved my children's lives. She saved this family. She brought down our enemies, and she taught me what true strength looks like."

Roland walked up the grand staircase, step by step, until he stood in front of Marlene.

Before three hundred of the most powerful people in Chicago, Roland Castellano—the most feared man in the city—slowly dropped down onto one knee.

The crowd gasped.

Roland pulled a velvet box from his suit pocket and opened it, revealing a flawless seven-carat sapphire ring surrounded by diamonds.

"Marlene," Roland whispered, his voice trembling as he looked up into her tear-filled hazel eyes. "I gave you pain six years ago because of lies I did not see. Today, I offer you my heart, my life, my empire, and my endless devotion. Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife?"

Marlene covered her mouth with her hands, tears of pure, overwhelming joy pouring down her cheeks.

Mateo and Sofia jumped up and down, clapping their hands wildly. "Say yes, Mommy! Say yes!"

Marlene dropped to her knees right in front of him, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.

"Yes, Roland!" she wept softly into his ear. "A thousand times, yes!"

The ballroom erupted into thunderous applause, cheers, and celebration as Roland pulled her into a passionate kiss, sealing their love before the world.
