Chapter 5 - The Awakening

Twelve hours later, the private medical wing of the Castellano estate was quiet and peaceful.
Marlene lay in a hospital bed in the recovery room, an IV line hooked to her arm. Her face was pale, and her hip burned with a dull, throbbed ache from the bone marrow harvesting procedure, but her heart had never felt lighter.
Through the glass wall, she could see two small hospital beds.
Mateo and Sofia were awake. The color was slowly returning to their tiny cheeks as Marlene’s healthy stem cells began reproducing fresh, life-giving blood cells inside their small bodies.
The door to Marlene’s room creaked open softly.
Roland walked in carrying a large silver tray. But this time, it wasn't filled with spilled soup or shattered porcelain. It held fresh soup, hot tea, fresh fruit, and a vase filled with rare white roses.
Marlene smiled faintly, trying to sit up. "Mr. Castellano... you don't need to serve me."
"Sit still," Roland said firmly, but with incredible gentleness, setting the tray on the bedside table. He pulled up a leather armchair and sat beside her.
He looked at her for a long moment, taking in the faint color returning to her cheeks.
"How are you feeling?" he asked softly.
"I feel like someone drilled into my bones," Marlene chuckled weakly. "But when I look at those two children out there... I feel like I could run a marathon."
Roland reached out, gently picking up her bandaged hand. His fingers smoothed over her skin with reverent care.
"Pike is gone," Roland said quietly. "And Dr. Harrison is in federal custody. The truth about Saint Mary's is documented. Sofia is legally and biologically your daughter."
Marlene’s breath caught in her throat. Her hazel eyes filled with tears again, but this time they were tears of overwhelming relief. "And Mateo?"
"Mateo is Eleanor’s biological son," Roland explained gently. "But his life was saved by your blood, Marlene. You carry his life in your veins now too. You are the mother of both of these twins."
Marlene looked toward the glass wall. As if sensing her gaze, tiny Sofia stirred in her bed, rubbed her eyes, and looked toward the recovery room.
The little girl slid out of her bed, holding her stuffed rabbit, and pushed open the glass door. She walked slowly into Marlene’s room on wobbly legs.
"Daddy?" Sofia asked, her small voice soft and musical. "Who is the lady?"
Roland looked at Marlene, his heart aching with five years of lost time. He knelt on the floor beside his daughter, wrapping his arms around her waist.
"Sofia," Roland said, his voice trembling with emotion. "This is Marlene. She... she is a very special angel who gave you and Mateo her blood so you wouldn't be sick anymore."
Sofia looked at Marlene. She walked over to the side of the bed, looked at the bandage on Marlene’s arm, and then reached up with her tiny hand, gently touching Marlene’s cheek.
"Did it hurt?" Sofia asked softly.
Marlene let out a choked sob, leaning into the little girl's warm touch. "Not anymore, sweetie. Not anymore."
Sofia smiled, pulled herself up onto the edge of the bed, and snuggled into Marlene’s side, resting her small head against Marlene’s chest.

Marlene wrapped her arms around her lost daughter, kissing her golden-brown curls, weeping silently into the warmth of her child’s neck.
Roland stood beside the bed, watching the woman who had transformed his dark world. In that quiet room, amidst the hum of medical monitors, the most feared mob boss in Chicago felt his cold, hardened heart break open, filling with a deep, consuming love he knew would never fade.
