Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

The confrontation with Celeste forced Gabriel back into the brutal reality of his world.

That night, he held a secret meeting in his study with Vance and his top four lieutenants—men who controlled the docks, the warehouses, and the armed security forces of the Rourke organization.

"The Vanes are preparing for a move," Vance reported, placing a map of Chicago’s industrial district on the desk. "Victor Vane has been buying up untraceable weapons from the East Coast. He knows the wedding is off."

"The wedding was never going to happen," Gabriel said coldly, staring at the map. "I agreed to it three years ago because I didn't care whether I lived or died. I care now."

His lieutenants exchanged brief, surprised looks. They had all noticed the change in their boss over the last month. The hollow, lifeless man who sought death in every conflict was gone. In his place stood a leader who fought with strategic, ruthless precision.

"What are your orders, boss?" one lieutenant asked.

"Fortify the estate," Gabriel commanded. "Double the perimeter guards. Station armed men at every gate. Grace and Ellie do not leave Lake Forest under any circumstances without Vance and four armed escorts."

"And Victor Vane?" Vance asked.

"Let him make the first move," Gabriel said. "When he does, we strike hard enough to ensure he never makes a second one."

While the estate was transformed into an armed fortress, Gabriel spent every evening ensuring Grace and Ellie felt safe. He didn't hide the reality of his life from Grace anymore.

One late evening, after Ellie had fallen asleep in her new bedroom on the second floor, Gabriel found Grace sitting by the fireplace in the main drawing room, holding a cup of hot tea.

He sat down in the armchair across from her.

"I am sorry for what Celeste said to you," Gabriel said softly. "And I am sorry that my world has put you and Ellie in danger."

Grace looked into the dancing flames of the fire. "I used to be terrified of men like you, Gabriel. Men with power and guns. But when I look at you... I don't see a monster. I see a man who lost his family and forgot how to live."

Gabriel looked at her, moved by her gentle perception. "I thought my life ended three years ago, Grace. When Lily died... I locked my heart in that room. But when I saw Ellie in your apartment, saving food for her father... she unlocked it."

Grace set her tea down and reached across the small table, placing her soft hand over his broad, calloused fingers. "You saved us, Gabriel. You gave my daughter a future. Whatever danger is coming... we will face it together."

Gabriel squeezed her hand, feeling a profound warmth spread through his chest—a feeling he thought he would never experience again.
