Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Invitation

Two weeks later, Grace was discharged from the hospital in a wheelchair, returning to the Lake Forest estate.
When the heavy iron gates swung open and the car pulled up to the grand stone entrance, Ellie came running out the front doors, her laughter ringing across the driveway. She wore a bright yellow winter coat, thick boots, and carried her patched doll in one arm and Lily's brown teddy bear in the other.
"Mommy! Mommy!" Ellie squealed, throwing her arms around Grace’s neck as Gabriel gently lifted her up so Grace could hold her from the wheelchair.
Grace buried her face in her daughter's curls, inhaling the sweet smell of baby soap and clean clothes. She looked up at Gabriel, who stood nearby, watching them with a faint, rare smile touching his lips.
For the next month, the estate felt alive in a way it hadn't in years. Grace recovered quickly under the care of private physical therapists. She spent her afternoons in the estate’s glass conservatory with Ellie, while Gabriel worked in his study with the door wide open—a stark contrast to the locked, silent fortress he had maintained for three years.
He began taking meals at the grand dining table again, sitting not alone, but with Grace and Ellie. He learned that Grace had studied art history before her husband's death forced her to drop out of college. He learned that she was quiet, deeply perceptive, and had a soft, melodic laugh that made his chest feel warm.
A subtle, deep connection began to grow between Gabriel and Grace—a bond forged not out of convenience, but out of shared grief, mutual respect, and an unspoken desire to protect the small child who had brought them together.
However, the peaceful sanctuary was shattered on a cold afternoon in mid-December.
A sleek silver sports car tore up the private driveway, screeching to a halt outside the main entrance.
The front doors were opened by Arthur, but Celeste Vane pushed past him without waiting to be announced. She wore a mink coat, high heels, and an expression of haughty disdain as her eyes swept across the grand foyer.
She walked straight toward the conservatory, where Gabriel was sitting at a small table, helping Ellie assemble a wooden puzzle while Grace painted watercolor landscapes nearby.
"So it's true," Celeste’s sharp voice cut through the warm room.
Gabriel stood up slowly, his posture instantly hardening into the cold, terrifying demeanor of the Quiet King. "You are not welcome in this house without an appointment, Celeste."
Celeste walked into the conservatory, her sharp heels clicking against the marble floor. She looked at Grace with disgust, then down at Ellie, who shrank back behind Gabriel’s leg.
"You're playing house with the staff, Gabriel?" Celeste mocked, crossing her arms. "My father and I have been waiting for you to finalize the shipping routes for the spring truce, and you're here playing puzzles with a beggar's brat?"
Grace stood up, her jaw set, stepping between Ellie and Celeste. "Watch your tongue in front of my daughter."
Celeste sneered. "Know your place, girl. You're a charity case sleeping in my future husband's house."
"He isn't your husband yet," Grace said, her voice steady and clear.
Celeste’s eyes flashed with rage. She raised her gloved hand to slap Grace across the face.
Before her hand could descend, Gabriel’s iron grip locked around Celeste’s wrist. His blue eyes were so cold, so devoid of mercy, that Celeste froze in terror.
"If you ever lift a hand in this house again," Gabriel whispered, his voice a deadly, low vibration, "I will end the truce, I will end the alliance, and I will erase the Vane family from Chicago before the sun sets."
He shoved her wrist away.
Celeste swallowed hard, stepping back, her face red with humiliation. She adjusted her mink coat, glaring at Gabriel, Grace, and Ellie.

"My father won't take this disrespect, Gabriel," Celeste hissed. "You owe us a wedding. If you break the contract for this trash... you'll bring a war to Chicago that will burn this mansion to the ground."
She turned on her heel and stormed out of the house.
